Team USA did not disappoint Thursday morning in Sochi as they cruised to a 7-1 victory over Slovakia, and they chased Slovakian Goaltender Jaroslav Halak out of the game in the process.
Halak weathered the storm in the first period, giving up a lone goal scored by John Carlson with about five minutes left in the opening frame, and it would be the only goal of the period scored by either team. Unfortunately for Halak, he would not be so lucky in the second.
Slovakia tied the game up just 24 second into the second period with a Tomas Tatar goal, but it would be the lone goal of the game for the team. Halak conceded 4 unanswered goals in just over 12 minutes, prompting Head Coach Vladimir Vujtek to turn to Peter Budaj. Budaj wouldn’t fare any better, as the first two shots he faced by Phil Kessel and Dustin Brown found the back of the net to make it 7-1, which would be the final score.
Game two for the United States will take place Saturday morning at 7:30 AM against Russia, who beat Slovenia 5-2 today. You can listen to Saturday’s game live at WGR-550 and wgr550.com.
