Team USA edges Russia in an Instant Classic

Coming off an impressive 7-1 victory against Slovakia in their last game, most expected Team USA to play in a tightly contested battle against the Russians this morning, and that's exactly what happened. A first period which saw some strong physical play including a dust up in front of Russian goalie Sergei Bobrovsky ended in a scoreless tie. Russia controlled most of the play, outshooting the US 13-8, and testing Jonathan Quick early on, who was equal to the task.

In the 2nd Team USA put out a much stronger offensive effort, racking up the shots on Bobrovsky, who looked a bit out of sorts at time but recovered nicely. The Russians broke the scorless tie about halfway through the period, after a flurry of chances by the Americans, a beautiful breakout pass to Pavel Datsyuk saw the russian captain manuever his way through the defense and send a shot past Quick.

Team USA would respond about 7 minutes later after an Alexander Radulov penalty put the Americans back on the Power Play. After a Zach Parise shot caremed of the pads of Sergei Bobrovsky, defenseman Cam Folwer snuck in from the point to bang home the rebbound, tying the game at One. That's how the second period would end, as Team USA took the lead in shots going up 22-21.

The third period opened looking a lot like the 1st, Russia controlling the tempo and preventing the United States from getting many scoring chances. That all changed midway through however, after Alexander Radulov took a silly hooking penalty sending the Americans back on the Power Play. Patrick Kane then lasered a masterful pass across the ice to center Joe Pavelski who hammered it home giving USA a 2-1 advantage.

It didn't take long for Russia to respond, as Dustin Brown headed to the box taking his second penalty of the game gave the home team the opportunity they sought. Pavel Datsyuk threw home a nasty wrister past the pad of Jonathan Quick and it was a 2-2 game late in the third period. Russia thought they had stolen back the lead when Fedor Tyutin fired a point shot past Jonathan Quick with 4:40 remaining. The goal would be reviewed and disallowed however, as the net was off its moorings. The teams would exhange chances to no avail, and regulation ended 2-2.

The US started off the overtime on the power play but failed to generate any great chances, about halfway through Patrick Kane recieved a beautiful outlet pass and had the game on his stick, as he went in alone on Bobrovksy, but unfortunately was foiled.

The Shootout was an instant classic, as in International Competition teams are allowed to recycle shooters after the 3rd round, While the Russians decieded to alternate Pavel Datsyuk and Ilya Kovalchuck, Dan Bylsma liked what he saw from TJ Oshie and sent him out 6 times in the shootout, he converted on 4, including the clinching goal.
