Miller Makes 17 Saves as USA routs Slovenia 5-1

Sochi, Russia (WGR 550)  -- Team USA followed up their impressive win over Russia with a 5-1 rout over Slovenia on Sunday morning.

Buffalo Sabres netminder Ryan Miller made 17 saves in the contest.  It was Miller’s first game for the red, white and blue as Head Coach Dan Bylsma elected to go with Los Angeles Kings Goalie Jonathan Quick for Team USA’s first two games of the tournament.

Phil Kessel got things going early for the Americans scoring 1:04 into the contest on the first shot of the game.  The Toronto Maple Leafs’ forward added another in the opening period to put USA up 2-0.

In the second period, Kessel completed his hat trick and Blake Wheeler added another to give USA a 4-0 lead.
Early in the third period, David Backes continued the scoring frenzy with his second goal of the tournament.  Slovenia also had to finish out the game without their best forward, as Los Angeles Kings Center Anze Kopitar was not on the bench in the final period of the game.

Things were looking good for Ryan Miller, until the final minute of the game when Marcel Rodman spoiled the Sabres goalie’s shut-out.  Still, Team USA went on to win the game 5-1.

The win completes Team USA’s preliminary round and locks them in as the first seed in the Group A bracket, which automatically puts them in the quarterfinals.  Stay tuned to WGR 550 for the latest Olympic news.
