Team USA earned a spot in the Olympic semifinals with a 5-2 win over the Czech Republic Wednesday. USA began the scoring early with a James Van Riemsdyk goal, but the Czechs came back with a tally from Ales Hemsky about three minutes later. After some good play from the Czechs for most of the first period, USA took the lead back with a Dustin Brown goal late in the frame. David Backes piled on late in third scoring with less than two seconds to go.
It was a quiet first half of the second period until USA captain Zach Parise recorded his first goal of the Olympics on the powerplay. The fourth goal from the Americans ended Czech goaltender Ondrej Pavelec's day 9:31 into the second period. Alexander Salak took the ice in relief.
USA's strong play continued early in the third. Phil Kessel stayed hot with his first tally of the game. The Czechs showed some signs of life with another unassisted Hemsky goal with seven minutes remaining.
