Top Prospect

Sam Bennett is an "edge of your seat" player

When it comes to playing hockey in Canada, you know you've got a special player when comparisons are made to Hall of Famer Doug Gilmour.  That is the comparison people are using to describe Sam Bennett.

The Kingston Frontenacs center will be one of the top prospects in the June draft and just last month, was ranked first among North American skaters in the mid term rankings from the NHL Central Scouting Bureau.

The 6-0, 180 pound Bennett has 32 goals and 82 points in 49 games this season.  But Bennett has a tough side too as his 103 penalty minutes will attest.

Bennett's coach in Kingston is former NHL defenseman Todd Gill who played alongside Gilmour when the two were in Toronto.  Gill says Bennett has all the attributes Gilmour had at that age but Bennett is faster than Gilmour.

Gill was a guest on the WGR morning show on Thursday and said the 17 year old Bennett is a special player.

"He is one of those players that, every time he has the puck, you get to the edge of your seat because you know something is going to happen with it" Gill said.  "He is the type of player that every coach loves because he can play the game any way you want."
