Team Canada proved to be resilient again in Sochi, coming back from a 2-0 deficit Thursday to defeat the United States 3-2 in overtime in the Women’s Ice Hockey Gold Medal Game.
USA and Canada showed their disdain for each other right from the get-go, as the first period saw 5 penalties between both teams, including a body check (illegal in Women’s Hockey) from Canada’s Tara Watchorn. The U.S. outshot Canada 11-9 heading into the second period.
No major scoring chances to start the second, shots still stayed pretty much even heading to the midway point of the period. With about 8 minutes left, the United States struck first with Team Captain Meghan Duggan notching her first goal of the tournament right off of a faceoff in the Canadian zone. Shortly after the goal, Canada did all they could on consecutive power plays (they even had a 5 on 3 for about 30 seconds), but team USA was able to neutralize the Canadian advantage to keep their lead heading into the final frame.
The U.S. had a power play right away at the start of the period after a tripping call against Canada, and they were able to capitalize on it. With 17:59 left, Hilary Knight pushed a shot into the crease and Alex Carpenter was able to put it away for the Americans, and it ended up being a much-needed goal.
With 3:26 left in regulation, Canada cut the lead in half as Brianne Jenner was able to bounce a puck in on American goaltender Jessie Vetter, providing tense final moments in regulation. With an empty net, the U.S. put a puck all the way down the ice with under 90 seconds left that ended up hitting the post, which would have likely sealed the game, but Canada was able to head back down the ice and tie it by way of Marie-Philip Poulin, sending the game to overtime tied at 2.
In 4 on 4 action, The US had a great opportunity in the Canadian zone with 12 and a half minutes left, but they turned the puck over and the aforementioned knight got called for a cross check, giving Canada the power play. Swarming in the American zone with the player advantage, Poulin notched her second goal of the game, giving Canada another come from behind victory, and USA has to settle for silver.
