USA took the first penalty of the game when Ryan Suter was called for holding the stick at the 12:53 mark, but the Americans managed to kill off the penalty. Team USA got their turn with the man advantage late in the period, but they were unsuccessful as well.
It was a quiet first but the scoring started right away in the second. Jamie Benn tipped home a Jay Bouwmeester shot 1:41 into the frame to make it 1-0 for Canada. USA had a couple of opportunities to even the score but they failed to convert on two powerplays in the frame.
The USA had some opportunities but still couldn't get one by Canadian netminder Carey Price in the third period. Jonathan Quick closed out a strong day in net on the other end of the ice, stopping 36 of 37 shots.
