USA Falls Flat in Bronze Medal Game 5-0

A first period that was a stark contrast from Team USA's semi-final game against Canada saw lots of scoring chances from each team but thanks to some great goaltending ended in a scoreless tie. Patrick Kane with the best chance of the period as he was selected to take a penalty shot after Finland's Kimo Timmonen shot an a broken stick that was lying on the ice at a Team USA player. Kane's attempt would ultimately trickle wide and the shutout was prevailed.

In the second Finland came out hot and never looked back as it took only a minute and a half for 43 year old Teemu Selanne to scoop a backhand past the shoulder of Jonathan Quick to give the Fins a 1-0 lead. Off the ensuing draw Finland kept the foot on the gas pedal as a rush into the Americans zone saw a pass from Jori Lehtera sail right to the stick of Jussi Jokinen who buried home the 2nd goal for the Fins in 11 seconds.

Coach Dan Bylsma quickly called a timeout to gather his troops and the strategy seemed to payoff as Team USA came out swinging in the second half of the period. The best chance for the Americans AGAIN came on a Patrick Kane penalty shot, though this time it was the post who foiled the Western NY native, as he clanked his wrist shot off the pipe.

The third period was a forgettable one for USA hockey as the Fins put an exclamation point on a dominating victory, tallying 3 goals and forcing the US to take multiple penalties en route to a 5-0 victory. Jonathan Quick stopped 22 of 27 shots, Tuuka Rask got the shutout stopping all 26 shots he faced.
