Sochi, Russia (WGR 550) -- Two days after shutting out Team USA in the semi-finals, Canada came away with the gold medal following a 3-0 victory over Sweden in the finals.
Carey Price was named the tournament’s best goaltender, and turned away 24 shots to earn the shut-out. Henrik Lundqvist made 33 saves for Sweden, while Sweden’s Erik Karlsson was named the best defenseman of the tournament. Team USA forward Phil Kessel was named the tournament’s best forward.
It is the second consecutive gold medal for the Canadians, who defeated Team USA for the Gold Medal in Vancouver four years ago. It is also the first gold medal won by the Canadians on European soil since 1952, when Canada defeated Team U.S.A in Oslo, Norway.
Canada was the first to strike as Jonathan Toews deflected a shot by Jeff Carter to score the lone goal in the first period. Sidney Crosby doubled Canada’s lead in the second period, when he beat Lundqvist on a break-away. In the third period, Chris Kunitz scored his first goal of the tournament to put Canada up 3-0. The Canadians would then hold on to secure the 3-0 win.
Sweden battled injuries all tournament long and also lost arguably their best player before the Gold Medal game. Aside from not having Herik Sedin, Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen due to injuries, the Swedes had to play the final game of the tournament without Nicklas Backstrom. The Washington Capitals’ Center was banned from playing in the game due to testing positive for taking Claritin, a banned substance. Sabres defenseman Henrik Tallinder entered the lineup in his place.
The only Gold Medal tie to Buffalo is former Sabres Coach Lindy Ruff, who served as an Assistant Coach for Team Canada. Only two Sabres came away with medals as both Tallinder and Goaltender Jhonas Enroth were part of Sweden’s silver medal team.
Hope this makes up for the demolishing of one of 7 wonders of Canada, the Crystal Beach snow caves.

Turned the game off after 1-0. There really is nothing to comment about. Will leave it at that.
I'm guessing Backstrom was banned for Claritin-D, which contains pseudoephedrine, a decongestant (and also a stimulant). Regular Claritin is just an antihistamine.
It's over now...pick up the phone Tim!
Let's start talking trades at the FNC and set up for press conferences. Ready to roll...fire up them CAT'S.
re; to its over now.
Can i get amen to that. that right tim time has come to see where this team is headed. So why not tell miller right now, either you are staying or leaving. stop draging your feet. and that really gose for all the players on this team. We just want to know who are the players that are going to be here next year. And the way it look it want be to many.
Not only the NHL but hockey in general is in trouble. Low scoring boring games because the coaches have managed to stifle any offense with their systems, 'traps' and any other things that create non entertainment. Claude Julien the guy who really orchestrated the design for Canada. Look at Boston for example, do they have any top offensive players, NO just follow their coaches 'systems' all you need

Canada's women's hockey = back to back to back to Back! Canada's men's hockey = back to Back! Thank you Stevey Y.
Watching the World Juniors and Women's Hockey is far more entertaining than the junk we just witnessed at the Olympic Men's tournament. What a joke. You have all this world class scoring talent to put on display, and what do we see?? 4 men back, neutral zone trapping, clutching and grabbing. Way to go Canada...You're supposedly the most talented team in the tourney, but you ended up just boring the opposition to death. Good job.
Re: In trouble
I hear you. I am really starting to lose interest in hockey big time the way it is being played. The quality of the games have been getting worse and it is at the point why bother buying tickets to go anymore. It's just not worth it. I and most blame Jacques Lamaire for starting this whole thing when he was coach of the Devils. More and more coaches are following suit and now the game is getting ruined. Chess board hockey. It's a Joke.
Roster freeze is lifted
Where are the trades???
Idea of the Day
Let's talk Best Roller Coasters. The heck with our Joke sports teams for a day.
re: In Trouble...
NONSENSE! The Boston Bruins were SECOND in the league in goals scored last season with 269 right behind the Penguins who led the league with 282. What you need is GOALTENDING!! WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? Go to REHAB!
Brighten up, the weekend wasn't a total waste
Dale Earnhardt won the Daytona 500 and Duke beat Syracuse in College Basketball. Duuuuuuuuuuuke!!! Just for the record: It was a good call Howard and Jeremy. Stop whining idiots! Waaaaaaaaahh, waaaaaaaaaahh, waaaaaaaaaaahh. Go Duke!
re: to in trouble.
You got that right. Every game its trap trap trap. Shoot it in maybe we will get lucky. Where are the skill players that can hold the puck in the zone. Hell on our team just standing around watching the goaltender get blasted. Then talking to each other about hey did you watch tom and jerry last night i was laughing all night. My man thats your man don't you surpose to be checking him. man who cares they are going to score anyway. Anyway im trying to get home and play with my new xbox. Now thats real hockey for lol.

The Comet formerly of the defunct Crystal Beach Amusement Park was the best. The coaster is now at The Great Escape Lake George.
