Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) -- Welcome back into the Ted Darling Memorial Press Box, high atop ice level at First Niagara Center. The Buffalo Sabres pulled out a last-second win last night, and are gunning for two in a row out of the Olympic Break against the Boston Bruins.
The blue and gold will be without the services of Tyler Ennis tonight. The forward is out with "general body soreness," and is listed as day-to-day with the mystery ailment. Jhonas Enroth is between the pipes, in what could be the first game of a new era in Buffalo goaltending. With Ryan MIller's future as cloudy as it has ever been, we do not know game-to-game who will be between the pipes. Henrik Tallinder is also back in the lineup after receiving an extra day's rest following his participation in Sochi. 16:28 - SABRES GOAL. A head's up play by Brian Flynn in the near-side corner to deliver a body check, put the puck right out to Zemgus Girgensons who was all alone. A much better start for the blue and gold tonight. 1-0 BUF.
12:02 - Shots on goal are 3-0, Buffalo. A solid start if you consider that the blue and gold killed off a penalty already. Also, the three Sabres' shots on goal are all quality chances.
9:13 - BRUINS GOAL. Shoddy play by Buffalo in their own zone. Carl Soderberg plays the puck off the wall, gives it to Chris Kelly who was all alone in front, and we have a tie game. 1-1 tie.
3:45 - Boston has really ramped up the pace since tying the game. They have owned the shots on goal, and now have the overall lead in the game 7-6.
End of Period
BUF: 3:32 - Zemgus Girgenson (6) (Brian Flynn, Jamie McBain)
BOS: 10:47 - Chris Kelly (5) (Carl Soderberg, Matt Bartkowski)
BUF: 5:19 - John Scott (2 min., tripping)
BOS: 1:16 - Team (2 min., too many men on the ice)
Shots on Goal
BUF - 7, BOS - 7
16:22 - Johnny Boychuk was in the penalty box for slashing Drew Stafford's stick in half, but the Bruins had the better of the chances. Enroth had to come up big on a breakaway chance, and the Sabres have 0 shots on goal to this point of the frame.
13:35 - SABRES GOAL. The bounce goes the blue and gold's way, and Christian Ehrhoff is settling into a nice groove two games out of the Olympic break. he took a shot that went wide of the net, Tyler Myers was there to slap it in from a bad angle, and Buffalo has another lead. 2-1 BUF.
10:50 - SABRES GOAL. That was one where Tuukka Rask makes the save if he is in net. Brian Flynn received a nifty pass from Ville Leino as he cut down the slot and shot the puck to the top corner of the net. Chad Johnson had the puck go off of his glove and into the net. 3-1 BUF.
8:59 - BRUINS GOAL. Zdeno Chara used his big frame to get position in front of the net and whack away at the puck and hammer it home on the power play. It was reviewed by the war room in Toronto and confirmed a s a good goal. 3-2 BUF.
6:04 - Enroth comes up big by stuffing Loui Eriksson with a beautiful pad save, and then Carl Soderberg takes a penalty at the other end. Buffalo goes to the man advantage, thanks in part to their goalie.
2:04 - BRUINS GOAL. John Scott turns the puck in the defensive zone, and BANG, it is in the Buffalo net. Brad Marchand gets the equalizer and this game is tied back up, now 3-a piece. 3-3 tie.
End of Period
BUF: 6:25 - Tyler Myers (7) PPG (Cody Hodgson, Christian Ehrhoff). 9:10 - Brian Flynn (5) (Ville Leino, Jamie McBain)
BOS: 11:01 - Zdeno Chara (14) PPG (Milan Lucic, Torey Krug). 17:46 - Brad Marchand (20) (Reilly Smith)
BUF: 9:44 - Zemgus Girgensons (2 min., hooking)
BOS: 0:53 - Johnny Boychuk (2 min., slashing). 5:26 - Brad Marchand (2 min., slashing). 6:58 - Milan Lucic (2 min., boarding). 13:56 - Carl Soderberg (2 min., tripping).
Shots on Goal
BUF - 11 (18), BOS - 18 (25)
17:18 - Marcus Foligno and Kevan Miller both received roughing minors at the end of last period for dropping the gloves after the whistle sounded. No punches were thrown, however, and they each received two minutes. Neither team was able to capitalize on the 4-on-4 situation.
10:49 - The first half of the period was played nearly whistle free. Now Matt Moulson heads to the penalty box after clipping Chris Kelly up high, and giving the Bruins a four-minute power play. This will really test Enroth and Sabres penalty kill unit. Boston seems to turn up the heat as the periods go on, and this could be more of the same.
10:17 - BRUINS GOAL. Well, that did not take long. Just over thirty seconds into the man advantage Milan Lucic loaded up from the point and blasted a shot through traffic to give Boston its first lead of the night. The visitors have now scored three unanswered goals. 4-3 BOS.
5:31 - Boston is content with running the clock out and just getting two more points in the bank, and the Sabres are not making it hard on the road team. Boston plays a good defensive game anyway, this is like old hat for them.
1:15 - Enroth has vacated the Sabres' net in favor of the extra attacker.
:52.3 - SABRES GOAL. A mad scramble in front of Chad Johnson benefits the blue and gold. Matt Moulson is able to jam the puck home on a "dirty goal" and this game is tied once again. 4-4 tie.
End of Regulation
BUF: 19:07 - Matt Moulson (16) (Zemgus Girgensons, Ville Leino)
BOS: 9:43 - Milan Lucic (18) PPG (Torey Krug, Jarome Iginla)
BUF: 9:11 - Matt Moulson (4 min., high sticking)
Shots on Goal
BUF - 7 (25), BOS - 7 (32)
4:38 - SABRES GOAL. Matt D'Agostini wins the race to the loose puck in the Boston zone, gets by Zdeno Chara, and sends the hometwon fans home happy. That was a hard working goal if I ever saw one, and gives Buffalo two more points on home ice. 5-4 BUF.
End of Game
Buffalo 5, Boston 4 FINAL/OT
BUF - 0:22 - Matt D'Agostini (4) (unassisted)
Well, the Sabres are 2-0 following the Olympic break thanks to some late game heroics by two in-season additions to the blue and gold's lineup. Matt Moulson did not give up with under a minute to go in regulation, and Matt D'Agostini got past one of the best defensemen in the game to pot the game-winning goal. It was not the prettiest of efforts again by Jhonas Enroth, but I am still very curious to see how he reacts in net if he indeed becomes "the guy" when/if Ryan Miller is traded by this time next week. The three-game homestand comes to a close for Buffalo on Friday night.
