Bills sign Aaron Williams through 2018 season

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- As one safety is getting ready to walk out the door, the Buffalo Bills insured that a similar story wouldn't be written about the other starter at that position.

Within the same hour that the Bills held a press conference to say that they would not be playing a home game in Toronto in 2014, the team announced they have extended safety Aaron Williams to keep him here for the long-term.

"I know that Russ is having a great plan to build this team into a playoff team again. We talked at the end of the season that, they're going to give me the responsibility of leading this defense to where it used to be," Williams said. "And that's a dominant defense of being aggressive and being nasty out there and making plays. I told him I accept the role of leading this defense to where it used to be, and just blessed they gave me the opportunity and trust me to be here long-term to get this team back where it started."

The contract, as reported by Mike Garafolo of, is a four-year extension that is worth $26 million and also includes another $1.25 million in incentives that could bring it up to $27.5 million. Williams confirmed to reporters that it is indeed a four-year extension. The average salary, without complete details of the contract being revealed, is worth $6.5 million per season.

The contract extension does not begin in the 2014 season, however. Williams still has one year remaining on his rookie contract that he will play under. His cap hit for this year will remain at $1,673,365. Williams will be paid his signing bonus for the recently announced extension, but the proration of that amount for the salary cap won't begin until 2015.

Williams converted from cornerback to safety in 2013 after his first two seasons saw him struggle at his initial position. He found a home in 2013, however, totaling 82 tackles, four interceptions and one forced fumble.
