In a scene very familiar to the 2013-14 Buffalo Sabres, the blue and gold were outshot heavily and failed to convert on their chances in a shutout loss. The lone excitement in the first period stemmed from a hit to the head by Forward Marcus Foligno, who was assessed a 5 minute major and a game misconduct. The Sabres did a solid job killing off the penalty for the first 4 and a half minutes but Jesse Winchester found a shooting lane with just seconds remaining and blasted a shot past the shoulder of Michal Neuvirth.
The second period moved along similar to the first, Florida taking liberties with the Sabres defense and Buffalo unable to find the offensive zone. Both teams were shutout in period two but there was a spark of excitement midway through the stanza as the Panthers were awarded a penalty shot thanks to a questionable hook by Drew Stafford. Buffalo’s new goaltender would hold his ground though and the Sabres would keep the lead at 1.
In the third Buffalo just could not get their game straight as they continued to take penalties giving Floridas 30th ranked Power Play numerous chances to improve their ranking. The Panthers would do just that just 4 minutes into the final stanza as Dimitry Kulikov ripped home a point shot that found that back of that. From then on the Panthers defense would tighten up and Buffalo’s just could not find their stride, as the final seconds ticked away on a 2-0 Florida victory.
