Titans release Ryan Fitzpatrick

(WGR 550) -- Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has met the same fate two off-seasons in a row.

According to Jim Wyatt of The Tennesseean, the Tennessee Titans have informed Fitzpatrick that he has been released from his contract before the life of the deal was reached. The Bills cut the quarterback in 2013, just months after former head coach Chan Gailey was fired from the team.

Fitzpatrick signed a two-year contract with Tennessee that made him the backup to former first-round pick Jake Locker. After Locker suffered an injury, Fitzpatrick started two games until the former could return. Just three weeks later, the normal starter sustained a season-ending injury that forced the former Bills quarterback into starting duty for the final seven weeks of the season.

The Titans parted ways with 2013 head coach Mike Munchak and hired Ken Whisenhunt to take over. Tennessee then signed quarterback Charlie Whitehurst days ago, who backed up Philip Rivers in San Diego in 2013 when Whisenhunt was the offensive coordinator with the Chargers. That agreement paved the way to Fitzpatrick's release to the open market.

Fitzpatrick, 31, is now an unrestricted free agent. He's played for four teams over his nine-year career.

What do you think about the Bills acquisition of Matt Cassel?
I like it. They can win with Cassel, a strong run game and great defense.
I don't like it. He's done nothing since his big year in 2010.
The Bills should still bring in another QB to compete.
