Canadiens Stifle Sabres 2-0

The Sabres' offensive woes continued on Sunday in a 2-0 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Dustin Tokarski stopped 29 shots for the shutout. Nathan Lieuwen made 10 saves in his NHL debut, in relief of the injured Jhonas Enroth.

Dale Weise gave Montreal the 1-0 first period lead, finishing off a bouncing puck in the Buffalo crease. David Desharnais' pass fluttered and ricocheted off a couple of bodies before deflecting off Weise's skate. Following a lengthy off-ice review, the goal was allowed to stand and Weise was credited with his fourth of the season.

The Canadiens made it 2-0 moments later on another quirky goal. Brendan Gallagher's 17th came on a shot that bounced off Chad Ruhwedel as the defenseman tried to clear the puck.

Lieuwen, promoted from Rochester earlier on Sunday, made his NHL debut late in the second period. He took over for Enroth, who was run over by Gallagher after the Montreal forward was shoved into the net by Jamie McBain. Enroth suffered a lower body injury and had to be helped off the ice. Lieuwen made his first save seconds later, an Alexei Emelin slapshot right off the faceoff.

In the Montreal net, Tokarski stopped all 29 Buffalo shots that were thrown at him. Lieuwen finished with 10 saves after replacing Enroth, who made 20 stops of his own before leaving early.

The Sabres, now losers of six in a row, head to western Canada next week with a trip to Calgary first up on Tuesday at 9 p.m. Hear the call on WGR 550 and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.
