Late Goal Lifts Rangers to 2-1 Win Over Sabres

Rick Nash found the net with less than two minutes remaining in regulation on Thursday, giving the Rangers a 2-1 win and handing the Sabres their fifth straight loss. Drew Stafford scored the only goal for Buffalo in the loss.

Neither team was able to find the net until about halfway through the game. Stafford finally broke the goose eggs at 9:06 of the second period, scoring in his first game back from injury. The Buffalo forward got his stick on a Mike Weber shot, redirecting the puck past Henrik Lundqvist, for the 1-0 Sabres lead.

The Rangers tied it with 31 seconds left in the second period, a quick shot from the faceoff circle by Benoit Pouliot, extending his scoring streak to seven games in a row. Stafford's goal marked Buffalo's only shot on net in the second period, compared to 18 for New York. Rick Nash put the Rangers ahead for good at 18:18 of the final period, blasting a one-timer from Martin St. Louis into the Buffalo net.

Matt Hackett finished with 28 saves, including 17 in the second period alone. Lundqvist stopped 23 along the way for New York. The Sabres head into their final two games on a five-game losing skid.
