According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, it wouldn't necessarily be a 16-game suspension for Gordon. Rather, he would be kicked out of the NFL for one year with the opportunity to apply for reinstatement.
Cabot also says the Browns have known about Gordon's failed test for two weeks. Meanwhile, ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Cleveland coaches were not made aware until about 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
It's not a year-long suspension for #Browns Gordon: he would be kicked out of the league. Could re-apply after one year.— Mary Kay Cabot (@MaryKayCabot) May 9, 2014
