In an exciting match from the first minute to the last, Team USA avenged two previous World Cup losses by knocking off Ghana 2-1.
The Americans wasted no time scoring as Clint Dempsey netted the first tally less than 30 seconds into the game on a beautiful strike from the left side of the box. With the goal, Dempsey became the first American to score a goal in 3 straight World Cups. The offense would be few and far between for the USA after that though, as Ghana controlled much of the play throughout the half. The Americans took some bumps and bruises as well including losing Jozy Altidore, who had to be carried off the field after a non-contact hamstring injury, which was later reported as a hamstring strain. Dempsey would leave momentarily as well after being kicked in the face and suffering what appeared to be a broken nose.
In the second half Ghana continued to pressure testing goalie Tim Howard throughout. They would finally find the back of the net in the 82nd minute thanks to Andre Ayew. The lead would be short-lived however as John Brooks, who had come in as a substitution drilled home a header off a corner kick to put the US ahead for good.
The United States has some time to recover, as they don't play again until Sunday evening against Portugal. We'll have coverage of that one right here on WGR550.
