Sabres land Gionta

ESPN's Pierre LeBrun reports that the Buffalo Sabres have signed the former captain of the Montreal Canadiens, Brian Gionta, to a contract.

The deal is reportedly worth $4.25 million over three seasons. It includes a no-movement clause for the first two seasons and a limited no-trade clause in the third year.

A Rochester native and a former U.S. Olympian, Gionta has 249 goals and 485 points in 776 games.

if they really signed mccormick again that's a major sign, for me, that he is going to get a lot of ice time, hopefully get some stats on paper, and be a trade deadline deal again. I like cody, but this is assurance the sabres are going to be a poor low scoring team again.

Hope Brad May is wrong about McCormick.
Please be wrong.

I would have preferred two years @ $4.5M/year
But I'll take this. He probably won't be too valuable in that third year, given his size and age.

Works for me
Give Gionta the "C" and Georges the "A." Character guys who will lead the youngsters. Like the moves and TSN does to.

This may not be the big splash on goal scoring but it is a leadership role that neeeded to be filled. There are still plenty of free agents out there. This is a solid start.

Giaonta & Georges
Two overhyped, overpaid, veteran players signed to reach the cap floor. I must have blinked and missed all the Stanley Cups won by Montreal during their tenure. Granted, when Myers is your veteran defenseman .... you need HELP but taking on his contract was more then enough compensation - no need to throw away a draft pick. As for Gionta, 35, mediocre, and 5' 7" says it all. The suffering continues.

Another excellent move by Murray.
I'm beginning to like this guy more and more. Getting rid of Ehrhoff, picking up Gorges, and now Gionta. This guy is fast becoming another Darcy Regier...and that's a good thing!

Good Move
He will be good role model for yougsters
07/01/2014 4:25PM
Are you kidding me? Over 4M for a very washed up forward and Ehrhoff walks away
A train wreck called Buffalo, just throwing money away.

Heard a rumor
That the Habs wouldn't even give him ONE year for 3 million.
07/02/2014 9:44PM
The league should ....
either heavily fine the Sabres or take away picks for a team that is obviously tanking.
07/03/2014 1:32PM
The Sabres Should Be Fined Heavily
for pretending to win with signings like this. Close to $13 million for a guy when the team he was captain of didn't want him anymore. The Sabres are now in the midst of being a laughing stock throughout the league. The question is do their fans know this or are they drinking the cool-aid?

With initial bids now in, what's your feeling about the future of the Bills?
With Pegula in, I'm more optimistic than ever
  Guarded optimism
I have a bad feeling the Toronto group will win
