HAMILTON: Sabres rookies scrimmage in front of a big crowd

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- The first period wasn’t much to write home about as only one goal was scored with very few chances.

Jerome Leduc came in from the right point and took a shot off the back wall from Nikita Zadorov to score with goalie Cal Peterson down and out.

There have to be more than 10-thousand people in attendance tonight and of course they’re here to see number one pick Sam Reinhart. On his first shift he made a nice play in own zone corner on Jordan Samuels-Thomas to get puck up to Zadorov and out. He then shielded the puck at blue line and found Zadorov at the point. A few minutes later Reinhart made a no look pass to Brendan Lemieux as the crowd responded.

The hitting was very intense for much of the period. Anthony Florentino got it started as he stepped up and hammered Justin Kea.

Zemgus GIrgensons welcomed Reinhart to the league as he demolished him at the wall.

Rasmus Ristolainen didn’t want to be outdone as he hit Maxwell Willman into the boards and then followed the play in and knocked over goalie Linus Ullmark.

Ullmark made the best save of the period robbing Colin Jacons on a cross ice play.

Mikhail Grigorenko was pretty quiet in the first period, Joel Armia tried to line him up for a big hit, but missed.

Grigorenko’s line had a real nice shift early in the second with Ullmark having to make big saves in him and Fasching.

Lemieux was quiet in the first, but spent the whole second period bouncing off Ristolainen. He then was jawing with him all the way to the bench after the period.

White scored two more goals with Patrick Russell finishing off a pretty passing play with Willman and Justin Kea. Kea by the way did pick a fight with Florentino.

Undrafted invitee Drake Caggiula from North Dakota welcomed Andrey Markov to the game collecting a Kevin Sundher rebound.

Blue got on the board after Ullmark left with Jonathon Martin finding room between the pads of Jonas Johansson.

Armia didn’t impress with a lazy no look pass in front which turned into an outnumbered rush the other way. Dan Catenacci hit the post.

Caggiula wound up with two goals as he got the empty netter.

Nick Baptiste comtinues to amaze as he scored. He has a goal in ever Sabres scrimmage he's played in. This is his second camp.

Overall is was a pretty good effort. Chadd Cassidy said, "Our staff was pretty impressed with the pace out there tonight. It was a physical game and I thought that it was the fastest scrimmage I've ever seen in Development Camp."

Linus Ullmark had a great season in Sweden. He was taken in the 6th round of the 2012 draft and he didn't let in a goal as he played the first period in a half. Ullmark made some great saves and has made some improvements since we saw him last season, "Probably my speed, how fast I can go to the next situation. I can make the first save, then go to the rebound and then you're there as fast as possible."

As far as why he had such an improvement the Swedish goaltender said, "I think it was the mental game, I had a lot of support from guys around me. I didn't have those bumps in the road."

The team is off on Wednesday then it's back to work Thursday at 10:30. The session will be open to the public.
