Bills' Manuel studied tape of 5 NFL QB's in off season

Pittsford, NY (WGR 550)  -- EJ Manuel has set some personal goals for his second season in the NFL.  While declining to share those goals publicly, the Bills quarterback knows if he reaches them, the team will reach their goals as well.

Manuel was a guest on the WGR morning show at Bills training camp on Thursday and talked about some of the off season work he did to prepare for year number two at the helm of the offense.

Manuel altered his off season training regimen, placing more focus on his knees.  This after suffering injuring to both knees last season that ended up costing him 6 regular season games in addition to prep time in the pre-season.

The Florida State product also took time to study tape of five specific quarterbacks: Drew Brees, Aaron Rogers, Andy Dalton, Cam Newton and Russell Wilson.

"I think they all offer similar things that I can do" Manuel said when explaining why he chose those five.   "Whether its throwing the ball down the field, the vertical passing game or taking off and running and just being smarter when you do that.  That’s one area I had to grow from last year.  That’s why I had the knee injury"(against Cleveland).

Manuel completed just 58% of his passes last season while throwing for 1,972 yards in 10 games.  He had 11 touchdown passes to go along with 9 interceptions.

There is no competition for the starting job.  Thad Lewis and Jeff Tuel are battling it out for the backup spot.  But that doesn't mean Manuel isn't facing a lot of pressure this coming season, to prove the Bills picked the right man for the job.  But Manuel doesn't go about that job thinking the weight of the Bills world is on his shoulders.

"I’m not really focused on the pressure.  Right now I’m just focused on each day getting better" the Virginia Beach, Virginia native said.  " I’m focused on my teammates as well, making sure they’re ready to go each and every day.  I don’t think its necessarily pressure.  If you go out there and prepare, there shouldn’t be any pressure.  Just go out there and play the game. Its still a game at the end of the day and just win.  If you win, everything else will relax and that pressure that you talk about will be gone."

You can hear the entire interview with EJ Manuel and hear what he had to say about the additions of Sammy Watkins and Mike Williams to the offense:
