FINALIST #1 - Brad in Buffalo (submitted 6/16) - A look at BUffalo in 2014 Things have never looked brighter for my home city, with upcoming waterfront development, the tearing down of the Aud, and the drastic reconstruction of Route 5. Let's stop for a minute and just imagine what the Buffalo of the future might look like, assuming we were to replace the Skyway, open up waterfront access, and even build that Bass Pro store!
Finalist #2 - Andrew in Lackawanna (submitted 6/19) - Greg Bauch Doesn't Have Ca Greg Bauch is a jerk. Wait, maybe I should elaborate a little.
Two years ago as a young, innocent, bright eyed rookie contestant, I felt a certain affinity to the producer of the Mike Schopp and the Bulldog show. He was the first of the “real” on-air celebrities I had met; yet, he possessed none of...
FINALIST #3: Eric B. in Cheektowaga (Submitted 06/29) A hot topic of discussion in the Bills’ offseason this year has been the high season ticket sales in spite of the consistent mediocrity (or worse) on the field. While I think that the relatively low price is an important factor, I don’t think it means all that much.
I think there are two reasons for the ticket sales: The Imprint Effect and the Red Sox Effect. By...

Russ in West Seneca (submitted 7/6) If you were thinking WGR Sports Radio was not far reaching, you would be wrong.
I was in New York City on business last week and while in a restaurant for lunch one day, I couldn’t help but overhear this conversation between a couple guys at the table next to me:
Balding Guy: So, what’s happening with the blog? You come up with anything?
Paul in Hamburg (Submitted 07/04) Not Even the Good Guys Can Be Trusted
The death of Steve McNair is nothing short but mind blowing. However, what is being reported by the Tennessean leads me to believe that not even the seemingly “Good Guy” in the National Football League can be trusted.
McNair and Sahel Kazemi were found dead on July 4th in the condo that McNair was renting in a apparent murder suicide with...

Gary in Tonawanda (Submitted 07/04)
The following is one average guys view on sports and a few other things
IS IT JUST ME OR..Do you bite your tongue every time you see someone smoking a cigarette in a car with children in the back seat?
IS IT JUST ME OR..Are the Buffalo Bills becoming more and more irrelevant?
IS IT JUST ME OR..Do we wish our hockey team was run like the Detroit Red Wings?
IS IT JUST ME...

Paul in Williamsville (Submitted 07/01) Greg Buck ruined my life:
The year was 1948..I was attending a Yankees game in NY city. I was a brash, young, bright eyed 20 year old kid with his whole future ahead of him. I always had been a relatively big eater. Loving hot dogs as I did w/the works,I made food my best friend. And it cost me. A waistline that was expanding,I realized my adult life wouldn't be easy if I didn't find a way...
Kyle in Kenmore (Submitted 07/01) This isn’t important… So why is it on?
Over the past couple of years, for all of the Spring and Summer months, we have had to listen to ESPN and the NFL Network tell us that Brett Favre is news. I guess a sure fire first ballet Hall OF Fame Quarterback with 3 MVP’s and a Super Bowl ring coming back to play for one more year is news… that is when he is indeed coming...
Clark in Hamburg (Submitted 07/01) A Brief History of Rec-Specs in Organized Sport (Part 1)
As a bespectacled young sports fan, I've always felt a bit of remorse for having not lived through the hay day of unwieldy vision-correcting athletic eyewear. As the price of contact lenses dropped, and their availability among younger age groups became greater, this ever evolving technology almost single handedly...

Tom in West Seneca (Submitted 06/30) Could This Year Be The One?
(Sung to the tune of Jingle Bells)
Refrain:
Oh, Buffalo Bills,
Buffalo Bills,
Could this year be the one?
Where we get to cheer you through a winning playoff run.
Oh, Buffalo Bills,
Buffalo Bills,
Could this year be the one?
When at the end we stand and shout: We are number one!
First Verse
For almost fifty years
We’ve come to watch you...

Lawrence in Snyder (Submitted 06/30) Picture a typical night at a Sabres game. The building is filled to capacity, the fans are excited, and Toni Lydman has yet to make any defensive mistakes that have put the team in a big hole yet. Max is steaming down the ice with the puck, and the only way to stop him is if the other team’s defensemen get’s his stick on him to slow him down. The officials hand comes up, Max looses...
Joe in West Seneca (Submitted 06/30) Take the ultimate Buffalo sports quiz
Let’s say you had to choose ... that you had the final say regarding all sports decisions in Buffalo. Would you rather ...
- Win a Super Bowl but lose the Bills to a major market in the next decade?
- Keep the team but never win a Super Bowl in your lifetime?
- Keep the Golisano, Quinn, Regier, Ruff team in place for the next...

Eric in Cheektowaga (Submitted 06/29) Hi. My name is Eric, and I am a man. A manly man! I have a manly job and do manly things. I talk in a manly way with manly words. I walk manly and I even shop manly. I enjoy manly sports and… I cried. I didn’t just mist up. I’m way past Jeremy at a wedding, make a scene for the bridesmaids to see how sensitive he is. ..
David in Lancaster (Submitted 06/29) I don't think the Buffalo Bills will move. I want to start out this blog in that way. I honestly, in my heart of hearts, believe that Jim Kelly will ride in on his white horse and save the day with the mysterious millionaire he says he has lined up to buy the team. No really, I do.
What happens, though, if he doesn't? Where can a die-hard Bills fan turn to sate his football lust? Many, of ...
Dan in Buffalo (Submitted 06/29) So the Sabres took the first step this past weekend in toughening up the team. The drafting of Kassian and Foligno gives them two gritty forwards who are not afraid to drop the gloves. Kassian seems to have an offensive upside as well and may be on his way to being a Lucic kind of player. The only problem is these guys might not be ready for a couple of years. Heading into free...
Dan in Niagara Falls (Submitted 06/27) "Golf is Not A Sport" Golf is not a sport. There I said it. Any of you guys out there that just love to harp on the fact that this meaningless activity of the snobby rich is a competitive sport are just kidding yourselves. There is no real conditioning necessary to maintain (see Angel Cabrera) to ensure top form. I agree that there is a certain level of skill involved, but there is no way that you can compare golf to...
Chris in Rochester (submitted 6/25) Hate. One word with four letters that defines the state of the Buffalo sports fan. Buffalo lives and dies through their sports like no other city. Now, some would argue that hope is our defining characteristic while others argue that failure defines us, but hate is deeply imprinted on Buffalo sports and shines through any other emotion.
A great deal of hate runs through our veins for our...
Steven in Buffalo (submitted 6/23) While I was growing up, my father always told me to be careful with how much I follow the Bills. He said that they would always find a way to lose. I was too young to watch the Bills-Giants Super Bowl, but I have seen it, and they sure did find the most heart breaking way to lose. Maybe he meant it’s not that...
Eric in Cheektowaga (submitted 6/25) Let me rewind my evening drive home. After a long and hot day with no a/c at work I drove miserably home. Traffic was what traffic is during construction season at workdays end in Buffalo. Going down Transit I sat behind some commuter who was holding up two lanes of traffic all by herself for what seemed like an eternity. Horns and yelling did not seem to get her...
Kevin in Snyder (submitted 6/25) - I hate blogging Seriously, I hate the idea that anyone, anywhere (like me), can “publish” any thought they may have on any subject regardless of their experience, expertise or insight. What makes matters worse, is I wish I had a quarter for every time a blog has been cited as evidence of truth on a particular subject. Blogging is not “publishing”! Blogging is the written...
Adam in West Seneca (submitted 6/24) - The Sabres need to sign Spacek 8 Goals 37 Assists 45 Points sounds like pretty good numbers for me. Especially since it’s coming from a Defensemen, a 35 year old Defensemen at that. These were the statistics of Buffalo Sabres Defensemen Jaroslav Spacek, last year his 45 points tied a career high set back in 2002-2003 with Columbus. Spacek played in 80 games and was at times Buffalo’s best Defensemen....
Jimbo in Hamburg (submitted 6/24) - Dick Jauron fired, replaced by Cryptkeeper Buffalo Bills owner Ralph C. Wilson certainly shook things up at One Bills Drive early this morning, firing Dick Jauron as Bills head coach and naming The Cryptkeeper his successor.
“When it came right down to it,” said Wilson of the coaching change, “appointing The Cryptkeeper to head coach of our football club was the smartest move to make.”
Phil in West Seneca (submitted 6/24) So, the WGR rookie is in an online format this year, huh? Well, why not. T.O. tweets, Donte Whitner Facebooks (Facebook needs a better moniker for its updates), and BuffaloBills.com texts me with player updates. Oh, and of course to remind me to buy my season tickets. Heck, why not take the entire NFL season online. Can’t be in front of the TV on Sunday for the game? Have no fear, we now...
Nick from Amherst (submitted 6/24) I understand there is some level of decorum and etiquette involved, but why can’t someone in the media call Dick Jauron or Darcy Regier out for their completely insulting answers in interviews?!?!? Ask them, “What was that?” or “You didn’t answer my question?” Maybe it’s against the media-athlete unwritten rules, like bunting to break up a no-hitter...
Pat in Clarence (submitted 6/23) At first I was going to go on a rant on how my seven year daughter couldn’t find the word “summer” in her dictionary – not because she isn’t bright, but because the word “summer” is NOT in the Expanded Edition: New Webster’s Dictionary...

Lawrence in Snyder (submitted 6/23) Are the days of tough practices and earning playing time in high school sports gone? With trophies being handed out to everyone in the league, everyone going out for ice cream after wins or losses, and instead of earning your playing time with hard work and improvement in practice, simply signing up for the team get you on the field.
There has been a big push in coaching kids that everybody...
William in Amherst (submitted 6/23) For the past five NFL seasons, there is a point where the apocalypse happens. It’s usually within the first two weeks of the year, when the air is still hot and even the Chiefs and Lions believe in the impossible dream.
It’s when I pick up a member of the Dolphins or Ravens in my fantasy league.
As a Bills/Browns hybrid fan (which is essentially deciding that you...

Paul from Williamsville (submitted 6/23) - ATROCITIES It’s not my place to say but,
Among the numerous memorable atrocities I can so easily want to forget growing up were a list of some that I am sure will still make some of you shudder. Oh sure there are the well known wedgies and cherry bellies ,but deeper then those..further down the rabbit hole of shameful places, things that people don’t talk about at parties are these:
Rich from Lakeview (submitted 6/23) - Time is now to honor our basketball best This past Thursday, my family and I took the opportunity to take advantage of the weather in Buffalo and take a walk around the Erie Canal Commercial Slip.
Continuing towards the south end of Main Street, we pulled up along side the wonderfully hulking butterscotch colored remnants of ‘The Aud’, Memorial Auditorium.
My eight year old son grabbed my hand and...
Christopher from Buffalo (submitted 6/22) - It?s time to get?cha popcorn ready a It could work you know. Terrell Owens could look good in Bills’ blue. Trent Edwards just might enjoy having Owens, Lee Evans and Josh Reed at his disposal. The Bills might rediscover the end zone. Tunk Schonert may add the word “downfield” to his vocabulary. Owens’ inner Little T just might Learn to Share the spotlight.
It doesn’t have to be a bad thing that...
Russ in West Seneca (submitted 6/22) With all due respect to Larry Felser, it is one of those opinionated days…
Do we really have a legitimate reason to believe the Bills will reverse their fortunes during the 2009 season?
Sure, Dick Jauron is beloved by his underachieving players and appears to have unlimited “get out of jail free” cards to submit to his incompetence-accepting owner and...
Joe in West Seneca (submitted 6/22) A. Antowain Smith. Two more Super Bowl rings than the Bills.
B. Bowman. As in Scotty; won a Stanley Cup just about everywhere but here.
C. Cousineau. As in Tom; first NFL pick who hated Buffalo so much that the CFL seemed appealing by comparison.
D. Drury. As in Chris; traded Peace Bridge for Manhattan Bridge.
Matthew in Orchard Park (submitted 6/22) - T.O. I have solved your problem. I have been thinking about T.O.’s housing situation and how it can be easily be remedied. We all know that T.O. has had trouble finding a place to stay for the season. Dick Jauron being the great coach and leader that he is should offer Mr. Owens a room in his house, kind of like Penguins owner Mario Lemieux has Sidney Crosby live with him. It would be a great gesture to a new player that...
Ed in Hamburg (submitted 6/21) Sports are such a funny animal. Why do we care so much? Why do I get nervous watching men I don't even know play a sport, a game, for which they are earning much more money in one year than I'll earn in 20? I always ask myself that question, yet I always end up like last year 20 minutes before the Celtics-Lakers game 6 nervous as an albino penguin in a bowling alley....
Don in Kenmore (submitted 6/21) First I would like to thank the guys at WGR for giving me the chance to write my first ever blog. While this is not something I am proud of it is something I need to do if I want to earn that prestigious rookie job! Of all the benefits this illustrious job presents I am truly banking on it to help my love life. Ok, so maybe that is more fantasy than truth. At any rate, who doesn’t live in a...
Brian in North Tonawanda (submitted 6/21) “I’m going to give you a very underrated junior RB. Very underrated. James Starks at Buffalo.” The NFL draft specialist and football talent guru, Mel Kiper, wrote these words on ESPN.com’s Chat with Mel Kiper and with them stimulated a buzz rarely heard in Western New York. Excitement continues to build as the 2009 University at Buffalo football season...
Nick in Amherst (submitted 6/19) This probably falls more in line with “Whiner Line” material, but nevertheless, this blog is going to target the unfortunate growth of a specimen in the Buffalo area simply called, “Softball Guy”. Hopefully, with some help, the people of Buffalo can help curb the population growth of this pest.
Michael in West Seneca (submitted 6/19) TOP 10 REASONS WHY I SHOULD WIN THE CONTEST.
#1 COMMUNICATION, I talk more then 55 year old, bald, white guy selling farm equipment at an auction. In fact, I possess 2 out of 3 of those qualities. I'm not telling yah which ones, it is after all radio.
#2 KINDNESS, I always rewind my VHS tapes. (There making a come back)....
Chelsea in Angola (submitted 6/19) - NHL Awards 09 So as I sat there in my living room watching the NHL awards, all I could think was that it was the most boring hour and a half of my life. Vegas? Honestly? It's not a hockey town, there is no NHL team there but clearly the NHL wants to put one there. Why else would they make us sit through an award show there? Most hockey fans probably feel the same way when I say that...
Paul in Williamsville (submitted 6/19) It's not my place to say,and I might be taking out my own knees, but doesn't a blog contest seem a bit contradictory in "Radio" contest.
It is,at best, inc ongrous. No one who writes well can do well on the radio (evidenced by Jerry Sullivan).
Seems to me that 500 words or less would only tell you whether or not that person a. has spell check (most do but think they aren't misspelling...
Dan in Buffalo (submitted 6/19) Ok now I coach in a Coach Pitch Girls Division of Softball. I got into coaching because my 9 year old daughter wanted to play and they needed volunteer coaches. There is another coach in our league tho that is a piece of work. This guy is very strange looking, single, lives at home with no kids, so don't ask me why he wound up coaching little girls softball. This is what....

Paul in Wililamsville (submitted 6/18) It's not my place to say but,
How many timeouts do you think people should be able to call in their life..I think 3 would suffice for me. many think its more. Let's review when a Timeout is absolutely necessary...
Timeout #1- You just finished a long day of gardening, worrying about your bills, trying to forget the property tax you owe and wondering how you are going to make it...
Tim in Rochester (submitted 6/18) - Bills Shock the World and Sign T.O. Aside from his menacing personality, his outright defiance to authority, his selfish attitude, his unwillingness to accept responsibility, his wildly entertaining sideline tantrums, and his pathological desire to be the center of attention, the Bills may have just made, dollar for dollar, the best free agent acquisition of the 2009 season.
Jamie in Kenmore (submitted 6/18) - WHY WE WATCH THE GAME I just got done reading a column by Jay Mariotti a favorite of mine and somebody whom I have the utmost respect for. His latest column focused on the news that Sammy Sosa tested positive for a performance enhancing drug in 2003. He gave background and details and all kinds of unimportant information dealing with this subject, and ended by calling him a liar...
Todd in Alden (submitted 6/18) According to the ESPN.com headline, The Los Angeles Lakers won the 2009 NBA Championship “after a seven-year drought.” And, just a few days earlier, FOX Sports ran an article that headlined, “Penguins win first Cup since 1992.”
I can just feel the pain of their fans. It’s upsetting to imagine Laker fans coming across the commemorative 2000, 2001 and...
Andrew in Sinclairville (submitted 6/18) The Minnesota Vikings should not sign Brett Favre. Now this has nothing to do with the fact that I believe if Favre does sign with the Vikings he just continues to show he is a jerk and is selfish, because not only would he be betraying the Jets but all the loyal Brett Favre Green Bay Packers fans....
Matthew Kushner - A Losing Mentality (submitted 6/17) As a Buffalo sports fan I have to hear a lot about how Buffalo has never won a championship in a major sport and how our city is cursed. First of all, I don't believe that Buffalo is a cursed sports city. What I do believe is that many fans feel we are and have a negative attitude towards our teams. I hate when fans criticize the Sabres or Bills for moves that they make or don't make. I feel like...
Tom in North Tonawanda If you are a baseball fan born and living in Western New York prior to 1970, odds are your favorite team was either the New York Yankees or the New York Mets. Some possible reasons for this could be, but not limited to the fact you lived in New York and they were from New York, state loyalty if you will. Or, perhaps you inherited your father’s, grandfather’s or big...
Matthew in Jamestown (submitted 6/17) Apparently all you need to do to get traded away from Denver these days is casually mention traveling somewhere to your GM. Here's an actual, unedited transcript of a conversation between Brandon Marshall and Brian Xanders:
Jeff in Amherst - Thankful (submitted 6/17) Well here it goes, my first “official” blog. Does anyone even know why they call it a blog? I bet Jerry Sullivan knows, he is a master at writing these things. Regardless, it’s worth a shot at becoming the next Rookie so here we go. How many people view the radio and newspaper as viable sources of information these days? These forms of media have been pushed aside by television...
Steve in Lockport - Brett Favre To The Vikings: Traitor Or For "The Love Of The The Past week or so the whole Brett Favre saga as picked up steam on the future Hall of Fame quaterback going to a divison rival, The Minnesota Vikings. Traitor they called Brett, the man that took GreenBay to two Super Bowls the first trip where he had won. Before you read this please keep in mind that Im in no way a fan of the Packers, Brett himself or the Vikings.
Eric in Cheektowaga (submitted 6/18) With the first real days of spring here, I recently decided to bring my son to his first baseball game. All through the car ride to the park, I waxed poetically of games past and mixed in the smells and sights that make baseball such a great live experience.
Todd in Kenmore (submitted 6/18) It’s funny to think about how much media coverage Brett Favre and Terrell Owens receive, especially when you consider that neither man will have a spectacular season this year. Suppose Favre ends up in Minnesota. The outcome is predictable: Favre gets off to a good start, suffers a shoulder injury midway through the season, and the Vikings end up 7-9. So what was the fuss about?
Evan in Orchard Park (submitted 6/16) Last year was my first year as a season ticket holder with the Bills. I definitely don’t regret it, and plan on getting them again this year. It was definitely a different experience going as a 20 year old than it was going as a kid with my dad, when I would wonder, “Why do all these people act so weird?”
Josh in North Tonawanda (submitted 6/16) As a hockey fan watching the way the Stanley Cup Playoffs ended last week it was as good as it gets without the Sabres being in it. A great game seven; to end a great final.
I actually don’t hate the Penguins but now, I have four months without hockey, and four months of Sidney Crosby promos lifting the cup getting jammed down my throat worse than the other octo-parents...
Mike from West Seneca (submitted 6/16) The sun is shining summer is upon us and another N.H.L. season in the books. Once again no Canadian city represents a Stanley Cup championship. You don't remember the last time?Well Columbus was a third line center.Yes!! it's been that long! Ok, perhaps I'm exaggerating; regardless it's been a long time....
Andy in Lackawanna (submitted 6/17) - Michael Vick Revisited: Moral Atrocity or It has almost been two years since Michael Vick and his associates were found to be running a dog fighting ring out of one of his Virginia homes. In retrospection of those feelings I had, that nearly everyone had, of anger, hurt, and empathy for the animals so cruelly mistreated, I find that they have mostly subsided. Instead, I reflect on what a societal backlash can do to a human
Sean in Hamburg (submitted 6/17) A few sports related items on my mind this week……
First, Danny Heatley on the block. I don’t care if the sabers have to get rid of 4 or 5 decent players in order to get this done, just GET IT DONE! This guy is a superstar, he has overcome a traumatic event early in his career, his fault or not, he dealt with it, got over his demons and he has kept climbing...
Paul in Williamsville (submitted 6/16) It's not my place to say but
I had something happen to me the other day that I am neither proud of nor ashamed. As a rule I always am very careful as I am driving near my home. Alot of kids play around and parents are not always the best at watching them. As usual I made my way the normal path, signaled well and was fairly assured I was home free. What happens? Some jerk pulls right out...
Paul in Williamsville (submitted 6/16) It’s not my place to say but,
Isn’t it likely we have missed the boat on what sports trading cards really are? Wouldn’t it be as wise to create cards for the regular folks. Let me posit...Jim Tibble, postal carrier for 26 years, there’s a guy that deserves a card of his own. With 30000 lifetime deliveries and an astonishing 1.2 BPR (BITES PER ROUTE) ...
J.R. in West Seneca (submitted 6/16) - Why the 412 towers over the 716 Buffalo and Pittsburgh are cities that are often viewed as similar in nature and culture. Both urban centers have seen a decline in industry, a loss of population, and municipal economic hardship.
The people of each town are always described with adjectives like: “hearty, blue-collar, and hard-working.” When a populace of the two area feels slighted on the national level...
Brady in Clymer (submitted 6/16) The world loves professional and collegiate sports, simple as that. Whether it’s football, baseball, hockey, basketball, or soccer, millions of people tune in and in record numbers time and time again. It continues to amaze me considering only one team out of many gets to win the Stanley Cup...
Joe in West Seneca (submitted 6/16) The demolition of Memorial Auditorium and the unfortunate passing of Randy Smith has resulted in a lot of Western New Yorkers reflecting on their favorite Buffalo sports moment. Mine is a baseball memory.
Michael in Clarence Center (submitted 6/16) Ok, time to call something out.
Being 22-years-old and a college student, I know that I am in the minority when I say that I am not a huge fan of going to parties. Actually I would almost say I hate going to them. I don’t really know why, it just was never my scene.
Steven from Buffalo (submitted 6/16) So I was bored at work the other day, and I began to think about which era had the better football players. While I think that today there are better athletes, I would have to say that the older players were the better football players. There is no doubt that Ray Lewis is a great linebacker, but how would he be as a running back?
Louis in Buffalo (submitted 6/15) I’m going to save whoever is reading these your 5ooth blog of the day about T.O. I mean I’m sure they are somewhat entertaining with 50% of the men confessing their man crush on him and the other 50% proclaiming how he’s going to ruin the team so bad that Trent Edwards will be playing in the CFL next year. Hey…at least you’ll be doing better than J.P...
Rick from Hamburg (sumbitted 6/15) Well buffalo sports fans and trench coat wearing pervs its time for us all to get excited..wink wink…buffalo has been granted a lingerie football franchise! Im wondering what will be more entertaining to watch the bills or the scantly clad hotties....
Tom from Buffalo (submitted 6/14) I have moved several times away from buffalo and have returned in both cases. WHY? I
know it wasn’t for work, why does buffalo seem to draw me back every time i leave its
grasps....
Dan from Buffalo (submitted 6/14) So I have been doing a lot of thinking on what the Sabres can do to make a major impact to the roster and really get things
moving back towards our beloved teams of two and three years ago. I have a possible solution, albeit a farfetched one for
all of you to consider. How about this, calling the New York Islanders to see what the asking price might be to secure the
#1 overall pick....
Mike from North Tonawanda (submitted 6/13) Many Americans are optimistic about the 2010 Men’s Ice Hockey team at the Winter Olympics. Some feel that if Tim Thomas or Ryan Miller can play at a high level and young players such as Patrick Kane and Zach Parise can get hot, the USA can challenge for a gold medal. This is all true but recently the US has not done well in international competitions and I credit this to USA Hockey....
Paul in Hamburg, NY (submitted 6/12) With the announcement that Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Turk Schonert was bringing back the No Huddle offense some people became concerned that the defense will get tired. However, these people are wrong as the defense should be fine.
Dan from Buffalo (submitted 6/12) So the latest athlete in the NHL to want a trade is Dany Heatley. A lot of fans probably kringe at the thought of him being a Sabre but I disagree. I know Heatley can be soft and does not use his size (kinds like Ales Kotalik….well without the talent) but he can also score 50 goals. He had back to back 50 goal seasons two and three years ago. If we could somehow package...
