Sabres shut out Colorado 2-0

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- Goals by Sam Reinhart and Evander Kane were enough, to along with 23 saves by Robin Lehner for a 2-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night at KeyBank Center.

First Period

17:48 - The Avs are buzzing early, flying all over the ice. Nikita Zadorov had a very good chance right in the slot just ten seconds into the game, but Robin Lehner made the stop. The young defenseman was in Jared Bednar's starting lineup tonight against the team that drafted him.

14:32 - Oh boy, did the Sabres just miss a perfect opporunity to get the game's first goal. Evan Rodrigues was right at the top of the crease with an open net, but a Colorado defender just got enough of Rodrigues to disrupt his chance and the puck went out the other side of the crease without issue. The blue and gold head back to the man advantage with Gabriel Landeskog headed to the box for tripping.

9:58 - Colorado had a firm grasp over this first period until the started taking penalties. Since then, it has been all blue and gold. Justin Bailey helped that with his speed through the neutral zone to draw one of the power plays. If they keep up the pressure, more power plays will follow. Shots on goal are 6-6 at the moment.

3:48 - Shots on goal are 9-6 in favor of Buffalo, and quite honestly it should be higher. They have been the dominant team, save the first three or four minutes of the game. The score should not be be 0-0 either, based on the play.

COL: none

Penalty Summary

BUF: none
COL: 2:10 - Andreas Martinsen (2 min., holding). 5:45 - Gabriel Landeskog (2 min., tripping). 19:54 - Cody Goloubef (2 min., holding)

Shots on Goal

BUF - 12, COL - 7

Second Period

19:12 - SABRES GOAL. It does not take very long for the blue and gold to capitalize on their third power play of the night. Sam Reinhart is able to get his thirteenth goal of the season. A big play for Bufalo in a period that is a problem area for them. 1-0 BUF.

9:39 - Shots are only 5-3 this period, but it feels like so much more. The action is picking up at both ends, but so far just the Reinhart marker has held up.

4:53 - INJURY UPDATE. The Sabres have announced via their public relations twitter account that Derek Grant is out for the remainder of the game with a shoulder injury.

1:41 - Buffalo has done a nice job of limiting Colorado's chances this period, I think moreso than even the opening twenty minutes. I never have really felt like Buffalo was in trouble with the puck. There was one time or two where I felt that way, especially early in the night.

End of Period

Goal Summary

BUF: 0:48 - Sam Reinhart (13) PPG (Rasmus Ristolainen, Ryan O'Reilly)
COL: none

Penalty Summary

BUF: none
COL: none

Shots on Goal

BUF - 12 (21), COL - 4 (11)

Third Period

15:33 - Jack Eichel nearly connected with Reinhart for his second goal of the night, but the pass handcuffed Sam and it was on his back hand. So close, but still just a one-goal game. You just hope it does not come down to a fluky bounce one way or the other to decide the game. If it does, the Sabres will only have themselves to blame.

11:32 - Colorado has the edge in shots at 4-3 this stanza. I just get the feeling that the game-tying goal is coming...and soon for the Avalanche.

8:39 - Buffalo has woken up and been playing better in the last couple of minutes. Reinhart alone has had two quality scoring chances either go off of his stick or into his skates this frame. He alone could have a hat trick and put this game out of reach. Instead, it stays 1-0 in favor of the home team.

4:14 - SABRES GOAL. There has not been a whole heck of a lot to cheer about this period, or this game for that matter. Evander Kane may just have put this one out of reach by doing it all by himself in the offensive zone. 2-0 BUF.

End of Game
Buffalo 2, Colorado 0

BUF: 15:46 - Evander Kane (19) (Evan Rodrigues, Jack Eichel)

win baby win.
That's the only thing that counts for the sabers. And that is the win column, this team should be able to get to the playoffs. And it really great to see this team, play as a team and not pointing fingers at each other. The players know what at stake and are trying to erase all the negativity about moving forward to the playoffs. And these upcoming games are winnable games, from here on out it's one game at a time. Hell even getting one point is better than a loss. lets go Rough Buff.

Time....

Thank You Robin
We need more men like Robin instead of the man child's running around in society. Guys who understand right from wrong, morality and the way its supposed to be. Robin did get yanked from a game and benched by the coach but several days later he came up to give the coach a vote of confidence in public. So instead of being a behind the scenes one percenter who give you the business behind your back he called out whoever and whatever is doing insubordinate actions within the team. Take a bow Robin as your owner falls into the latter.

Hitchcock still available?
If there is ANY truth to Bylsma being on the hot seat down the stretch, they'd better move fast and grab Ken Hitchcock. He's exactly what this group needs!

Don't Want to Rain on the Parade, BUT ...
While I'm happy the Sabres won (and it's nice/good they did), the truth is that they WERE SUPPOSED to have won. For whatever reason, despite having many quality players, this year Colorado is simply not playing well as a team and their record is terrible. Add to that mix the fact that we were playing at home and have a playoff race to "play for," and the game in all actuality "shouldn't" have even been "close" -- yet it was. Too soon to celebrate and read our press clippings!!! We need to bear down, redouble our efforts as the regular season winds down and press ahead full speed with our unwavering eye on the objective. And, as for @ Thank You Robin, what's with the ridiculous ad hominem personal attacks? What are you smoking and spewing? "Right from wrong," "morality," "one percenter who give you the business behind your back," "your owner falls into the latter," "insubordinate actions within the team" -- Whiskey Tango Foxtrot ??? No drama please -- if Robin Lehner wants to PUBLICLY say something complimentary about his coach (or anyone for that matter), that's fine, and he should ... but we don't award trophies for people speaking well of others as they ought to.

Hockey is the Worst..........
Looking at today's poll, 92% of voters won't be watching any of the NBA All-Star game or skills competition. Are you kidding me? The NBA is the most exciting sport to watch both live and on TV. The action, athleticism, and scoring are unmatched by any sport. Someone please tell me how spending money and watching a Sabres game or any hockey game is fun and exciting? Last night's 2-0 win? Oh I how I wish the Braves would have stayed and the Sabres had left Buffalo. Heading to Cleveland next weekend to watch the Cavs and Bulls............

Comment :
Are you sold on Robin Lehner as the Sabres #1 goalie?
Yes. His play the last 2 months has sold me.
Not yet. I need to see him play well/stay healthy the rest of the season.
  No. He's not the answer. I wouldn't re-sign him.
