(WGR 550) -- For Sabres general manager Darcy Regier, the weekend's NHL Entry Draft was a success, but the real additions are forthcoming.
"The preference would be to make some changes," Regier told The Howard Simon Show during a Monday morning conversation. "That's what we're aiming at. We're going to try and look at our defense and see if we can add something there. Our No. 1 objective is to make at least one positional move there."
It was a talk that ranged from the newly-minted draft picks to the blue-and-gold futures of Ryan Miller and Jason Pominville.
"Our focus is going to be on trying to get Ryan signed over the long-term, and that obviously is going to involve market value," Regier said, adding that the team is comfortable with a long-term deal. "Someone like Chris Kelly in Ottawa just signed a four-year deal, so you have to look at those kind of deals and beyond."
"I would say the same thing about Pominville. It used to be that a three-year contract was a long contract, and one or two was the norm. As you approach free agency, you have to be prepared to look at three-plus, four, five, and in some cases six or seven. You just want to make sure you're making the right decision for the club and that the player is able to deal with that contract and play under it."
Regier said the team will talk with Maxim Afinogenov and his agent in the near future about No. 61's future with the club, and that he's open to Teppo Numminen's return to blue and gold.
