Who Is Steve Johnson?

So at this point we know all about the high draft picks of the team this year. Leodis McKelvin is a great cover corner and can return kicks. James Hardy is tall, tall....and did I mention he's really tall? But what about the other draft picks, the late rounders that are fighting for their proverbial NFL lives trying to make the roster.

7th round receiver Steve Johnson fits that bill completely (no pun intended). Lets give you a little background on the man that I think could very well make an impact on the Buffalo Bills roster before it's all said and done.

Johnson, who wants to be known as 'Stevie' mind you, grew up in San Francisco. He spent his first two seasons of post high-school football at a junior college and was then extended an offer by Kentucky to play with Andre Woodson and that high powered offense of theirs. His junior season he really didn't do much, as the high powered Kentucky offense really was just straddling the threshold of becoming something special.

Going in to his senior season, he wasn't even on the slightest of horizons as far as being drafted into the NFL was concerned. In fact, scouts came to see his receiver teammate Keenan Burton more than they did him. After the first few games though, those same scouts began to take notice.

Not only did he become a viable option for Kentucky, but he became the number one option for Woodson in a feared passing attack that upset the eventual national champion LSU Tigers during the season.

It seemed like he was always open, because well, he was. He created separation from the defenders quite well, and the one thing I've always liked about him was that he knows how to shield the defender well which creates a great angle for the QB to get him the ball.

If you want stats from his college turnaround, his junior year he had just 12 receptions as a Wildcat. His senior year? Try 1,041 receiving yards with a YPC of 17.4. That's 300 more yards on the season than the highly touted Keenan Burton.

Let's forget about the on-the-field stuff for now.

Genuine. Stevie Johnson is every bit of the word. This is an individual that stayed after the first night practice at least 30-45 minutes signing autographs for any person that wanted one. Not only did he do that, but he did it with a smile on his face while interacting with the Bills faithful.

If I could paint a picture for you, there was a little boy just standing by the railings with a mini football in his hands, not even extending it for an autograph. Johnson reached through the railing, took the football and signed it for the boy, putting a huge smile on his face.

Add that up with the fact he puts in extra work studying with the veteran receivers to make himself better on a daily basis and you get a great combination. I was ecstatic when the Bills selected him this past April. I have a feeling it won't be long before he's a contributor to this offense.

Johnson has the skill and desire to be an impact player for the Bills if he gets the opportunity, but better yet, he has the tools to be an impact as an individual in this community.

Not too bad for a 7th rounder, right?
