A former Sabre killer will now be coaching their prospects. Kevin Dineen will be named Portland's coach Tuesday. Dineen has coached the Pirates for Anaheim for three seasons.
Dineen was AHL coach of the year in his first season. He had a franchise best 53-19-5-3 record during the regular season, 114 points, an AHL record 27 road wins, a regular season Eastern Conference title and their first ever Atlantic Division championship. Dineen lost in the Conference Finals to Hershey.
The next season, Dineen missed the playoffs, but this year he was back in third place and took the Pirates to the Conference Finals.
Dineen's career record is 135-76-13-16 in the regular season and 22-15 in the playoffs.
Ryan Miller and Andrew Peters brothers played for Dineen in Portland as did former Niagara captain Matt Caruana.
As a player, Dineen killed the Sabres scoring 37 goals and 33 assists in 82 games. That's 11th all-time in Sabres hostory. He had three goals and three assists against the Sabres in 1993 while playing for Philadelphia.
