Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) -- The Sabres have signed forward Jason Pominville to a 5-year extension worth 26.5-million dollars. WGR's Paul Hamilton has learned that Pominville will make 4.5-million in 2009 and 5.5-million every year after that. The 25-year old was entering the final year of his contract, but will now be with the team long-term.
Pominville played in every game last season for Buffalo and registered 27 goals and 53 assists. In 3 seasons, all with Buffalo, he has 79 career goals. Drafted in the 2nd round by the Sabres in the 2001 entry draft, Pominville has 9 goals and 11 assists in 34 post season games. He was the teams' captain at the end of the 2007-08 campaign.
Pominville's agent, Norman Dupont, spoke with WGR 550's Howard Simon earlier this week to declare a Friday deadline for contract talks. Pominville did not want to go into the season with his contract creating a distraction. Dupont and GM Darcy Regier worked through the week to hammer out the final details of the new deal.
