Notes from Sabres practice: Four lines, Obama

The Sabres held a quick but spirited practice Wednesday morning at HSBC Arena, with the forward lines as follows:

Thomas Vanek-Derek Roy-Ales Kotalik
Clarke MacArthur-Jochen Hecht-Jason Pominville
Maxim Afinogenov-Adam Mair-Drew Stafford
Dan Paille-Paul Gaustad-Pat Kaleta

Lindy Ruff remarked upon the full-team effort against Washington and New Jersey, and I asked whether the team was returning to the oft-remarked "rolling four lines" status of 2006-07.

"It looked really effective the last couple of games, and it would be great to get back to that where the other teams worry about us."

I talked to a couple of the American players on the team about Tuesday's election.

Patrick Kaleta said he didn't vote because he isn't "knowledgable in the political spectrum," but did say he was hopeful of the outcome.

"Tell you the truth, obviously everyone's preaching change, so I'm going to expect that a little bit, and I hope that it works out for the best and life gets better for everyone."

Ryan Miller was a little more verbose with his answers.

"It was a pretty unique election," he said. "There were a lot of firsts. The country's in need of a new direction, no matter who was going to take office. We have our president-elect now, and I'm not going to get into the politics of who I voted for, but I think either person would've brought a good, new direction."

"Everyone's well aware that people are pretty fed up, and they want to see something different. In the last, I'll call it 'the regime,' I wasn't impressed with that last one. I'm happy that we get to move forward in a few months."

Miller had an opinion of why Barack Obama won.

"It went from people wanting change to wanting a completely different look. The Republican Party had a long time to do something with the country and I don't think they've done a very good job. They looked out for their own special interests. I think McCain would've walked the line, and been more towards the liberal than a lot of Republicans, so it would've been nice to see what he had, but I'm happy with the new direction. I'm not going to say who I voted for, either way."

He was thrilled with the reported high voter turn-out.

"I'm just glad that it sounds like a lot of people voted. That's huge for our country. People need to get more involved in the community and our process."
