Tampa, FL (WGR 550) -- Nathan Gerbe will play his first National Hockey League game tonight in Tampa. He arrived while practice was going on this morning. The players stopped their drill and tapped their sticks on the ice as he skated out. To make room, Mark Mancari was sent to Portland. Mancari had played seven games and would have had to pass through waivers again had he reached 10.
Gerbe has played in big games before as he helped win a national championship for Boston College last April. He said he's still a little nervous and excited to try to help this team score goals. Lindy Ruff said Gerbe is not a savior and he told him a few things with the power play. He basically wants the kid to play his game. The system taught in Portland by Kevin Dineen is the same so that won't be a problem.
Gerbe scored 14 goals and 10 assists in 21 games with the Pirates. Mancari's played tailed off considerably after a good start. He had one goal and one assist with the big club.
Ryan Miller will start in goal. Clarke MacArthur told me his ankle's sore, but ready to play. He mentioned it's easier to skate than walk. Craig Rivet likely isn't ready, but nothing was confirmed this morning.
