Toronto, ON (WGR550) -- The Buffalo Sabres used a pair of goals by forwards Jason Pominville and Derek Roy to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 on New Year's Day at Air Canada Center.
Neither team scored in the opening period. Late in the first Sabres goalieRyan Miller stopped Niklas Hagman on a penalty shot. The shot was awarded after Derek Roy grabbed the puck out of the crease and pitched it away from the net with Miller trying to recover from making a save. The Leafs outshot the Sabres 9-7 in the opening period.
The Sabres struck first with a power play goal 6:49 into the middle stanza. Jason Pominville blasted the shot home from the point, with assists to Jaroslav Spacek and Roy.
Buffalo came right back two and a half minutes later with their second of the period. Roy scored his 12th of the year to give Buffalo the 2-0 lead. Thomas Vanek and Drew Stafford picked up assists on the goal.
The team continued to dominate the middle period with Jason Pominville's second of the game, and 12th of the year, unassisted for the 3-0 advantage. The two teams each getting 8 shots on goal in the second.
Buffalo successfully killed off a 5-on-3 power play early in the third period. First, Stafford was called for hooking as the second period expired. Nearly two minutes into the period Henrik Tallinder was called for delay of the game for shooting the puck over the glass.
Roy scored his second of the game, and 13th of the year, 5:58 into the final period. Stafford and Vanek adding their second assists of the game on the goal, 4-0 Buffalo.
The Maple Leafs got on the board nearly halfway through the third period to cut Buffalo's lead to 4-1. John Mitchell credited with the goal, assisted by Jamal Mayers and Ian White. Miller shut the door the rest of the game. The Leafs outshot Buffalo 11 to 5 in the final period.
Ryan Miller made 27 saves for his 16th win of the season. Leafs goaltender Curtis Joseph stopping 16 of Buffalo's 20 shots in the game.
