Well let me start off this week's big board by finally publicizing a big announcement that is now official...
I will be covering the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis in just over one week. The dates of the combine extend from February 18-24, and you'll be getting a local angle on all the happenings at the combine all week long.
Keep in mind, any questions about prospects heading in to the combine, e-mail me at JoeB@wgr550.com.
If you've missed out on all the Big Board fun so far, check out our very own section of the web site devoted to the 2009 NFL Draft! You'll find all of my rankings up until this point.
Now for prospects 31 through 40:
31) DT Fili Moala - USC
USC makes yet another defensive appearance. I like the prospects of Fili Moala a lot, but only in the right scheme. He's got an incredible burst that can give lineman fits, but at the same time I don't know that he has the power to play as an every down defensive tackle. I think the place Moala finds his niche is as a 3-4 defensive end.
32) OG Duke Robinson - Oklahoma
I think in the end Robinson will end up as a first rounder, but he certainly disappointed me down the stretch. Too many stupid mental mistakes in crucial games down the stretch that ended up hurting his team. As a matter of fact, the left side of the offensive line (including prospect Phil Loadholt) was just a giant momentum killer. But Robinson is still a legit prospect with the size and the talent to make him a nice starting option for some team.
33) DE Michael Johnson - Georgia Tech
Here is my odds-on-favorite to win the "Workout Warrior" award bestowed at each and every combine. His pre-combine measures are insane. Standing 6'7" and weighing in at 260 pounds, he's an athlete's athlete. I see Johnson as the type to only use in passing situations. Oh yeah, and he might just have the longest neck I've ever seen in my life.
34) CB Darius Butler - Connecticut
I really, really like this cornerback class by the way. Butler's prowess is in his fluid hips, perhaps the single biggest asset a very good corner must possess. He struggled just a little bit in Senior Bowl practice but I chalk that more up to anxiety than anything. He shut down anything that moved in the Big East.
35) HB Donald Brown - Connecticut
Run on Huskies! If anyone's keeping track, UConn has two prospects on my rankings before some of the "traditional" powers have even gotten one. Yeah Miami (FL), Tennessee and UCLA, I'm talking to you. Anyway, Brown was the quintessential workhorse. If he would have gotten hurt at any point, the Huskies offensive scheme would have been thrown out the window. He just doesn't look right when he's catching the ball though. It just doesn't look natural.
36) TE Chase Coffman - Missouri
Worry not, weary Bills fans. The second tier of tight end prospects have hit us. The pros about Coffman? A pure set of hands that can catch most anything thrown his direction, and a nice ability to finish off his routes. Cons? He played in a spread offense that barely ever had him line up in a three-point stance, and a raw run blocker. Pick your poison.
37) S Rashad Johnson - Alabama
A former walk-on. I'll say this once, walk-on's never forget. Ever. Case and point, look at Thomas Howard now for the Oakland Raiders. Johnson has certainly turned himself in to the top safety prospect in my mind, but team's may be scared off because of his smaller frame (190 lbs.).
38) CB Macho Harris - Virginia Tech
Somewhere Randy Savage is smiling. Macho's real name is Victor, and he's just another solid cornerback prospect from Virginia Tech. He doesn't have the best recovery speed in the world, but I could see him fitting in nicely in a Cover-2 scheme.
39) OT Phil Loadholt - Oklahoma
If Phil Loadholt wasn't bigger than a house, I don't know that I'd rank him this high. But the dude is 6'8", 340 lbs. He struggles against speed rushers and his footwork looks clumsy at times. But there's also those other times when defensive ends get lost in the abyss because he just covers them whole. Loadholt lacks the footwork of a left tackle, but he'll be able to transition to the right side.
40) C Alex Mack - California
I don't think Mack is a fit for every team, but he's still a great talent that will land him in the 2nd round barring any setbacks. I've said it before, but put him in a zone blocking system and that's the place you'll see Mack thrive the most.
Well that's it, I'll hit you all with the final ten of my Top 50 before all the NFL Combine fun starts next week! Again, e-mail me folks, JoeB@wgr550.com.
