Detroit's sweep of Columbus was aided by a final minute power play awarded on a "too many men" call that has been cited as dubious by several sources. Replays showed Fredrik Modin handled the puck before the man who was replacing him, Jakub Voracek, hit the bench. The Blue Jackets were whistled for a bench minor, and Johan Franzen's second goal of the series ended a wild Game Four by a 6-5 score.
The Red Wings peppered Steve Mason with 41 shots, and six beat the rookie star. Two of those goals came from Marian Hossa, who continues to shake his reputation as a playoff ghost. The 30-year old had four points in the series, carrying a plus-2 rating. Franzen led the series in scoring with two goals and four assists. Rick Nash and R.J. Umberger led the Columbus offense with just three series points a piece.
-- The Anaheim Ducks are now one win away from labelling another San Jose Sharks season a disaster after Jonas Hiller posted another blanking of the West's No. 1 seed, 4-0. Rookie Bobby Ryan continues to dazzle for the Ducks, scoring his third and fourth goal of the post-season. Anaheim has a 3-1 series lead, and can advance in San Jose at 10 p.m. Saturday.
-- Philadelphia is taking its series back home down 3-2 after a 3-0 Game Five shellacking of the Penguins. Martin Biron stopped all 28 shots he faced, and Matt Carle added two assists for the Flyers. The two teams will stage an afternoon affair at 3 pm. Saturday.
-- Pest David Clarkson scored the only Devils goal as New Jersey put Carolina on the brink of elimination with a 1-0 home win. System or not, Martin Brodeur made 44 saves in the win. The 3-2 series heads back to Carolina on Sunday.
