The man who quarterbacked the Bills to their two AFL championships has died. Jack Kemp passed away today. He announced five months ago that he had cancer.
Kemp started with the Los Angeles Chargers when the AFL began in 1960. Two years later, the Bills got him on waivers for $100. He spent the next six seasons leading the Bills retiring after the 1969 season. He posted a 43-31-3 record with the Buffalo after going 22-6 with the Chargers. Kemp was a winner and leader with the Bills, but he didn't put up good stats. He only completed 46.4-percent of his passes. He threw 77 touchdowns with 132 interceptions as a Bill. He did score 40 rushing touchdowns in his AFL career. Kemp was 1965 AFL Player of the Year, was a first team All Star twice and went to the All Star Game seven times. Kemp went up on the Bills Wall of Fame in 1984.
When Kemp left football he immediately got interested in politics. He served Western New York in Congress for nine terms. In 1988, he ran for President. He was Housing Secretary for George Bush and then was a Vice Presidential candidate with Bob Dole.

Jack remains a legendary figure in our team's history, having led our 1964 and '65 teams to the American Football League Championship titles. His many outstanding unique qualities made him the exemplary role model of leadership for our team and later for our country. While today's news brings us much sadness, we cherish the many fond memories of Jack the loving husband and father, Jack the quarterback and Jack the congressman and we celebrate his life well lived. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Joanne and their entire family."
