Regier on free agency

nick@wgr550.com

(WGR 550) -- Darcy Regier joined The Howard Simon Show 40 hours before the start free agency and had plenty to say.

On the possibility of signing "big name" free agents:

"We would have to make some moves in conjunction with that," Regier said. "There are players we've looked at and felt there's a change that could be good for both the player and the organization. It doesn't mean the player won't be back. It doesn't mean we can't get the performance we expected from the player, but we would look at some changes."

On why they haven't reached deals with restricted free agents Andrej Sekera and Drew Stafford:

"We're going to take the position that we're not going to do something that becomes very costly purely out of the fear of an offer sheet."

On if they looked into disgruntled Ottawa forward Dany Heatley:

"I did talk to Bryan Murray, and we did have a conversation about where he is in that situation," Regier said. "Any move that Ottawa's going to make, they're going to get a big return. You take a look at who they might want from our hockey, and it's not an area we're prepared to move in."

mr. realistic

06/29/2009 12:18PM
yeah...
i wouldn't want Heatly anyway, i don't think he's what the team needs at this point, i think without Alfredsson and Spezza he doesn't put up the same numbers anyway.

Bruce's Juice
Of course we are not willing to deal for Heatley. That would require balls, and Darcy had to hand those in at the door when he first came to Buffalo.
06/29/2009 12:55PM
Frankie
Say goodbye to Sekara & Stafford if they get offer sheets. Spacek is good as gone too.
06/29/2009 12:56PM
Regier afraid of free agency
Sounds like he's pretty content with the team we have and the mediocre record they put up. Sounds like something to get excited about :/
06/29/2009 12:57PM
heatley
whoever wants heatley on the sabres is a sucker. he is not the answer. and whoever the genius is that called the whiner line saying they would take heatley over vanek clearly lives under power lines and eats paint chips for a snack.
06/29/2009 12:58PM
Frankie
You watch, Heatly will go to Detroit for a second round choice next year!
06/29/2009 12:58PM
Bandwagon hater
I think Heatley would be a great addition but i wouldn't give up too much for him. "You take a look at who they might want from our hockey, and it's not an area we're prepared to move in." = they want Vanek or possibly Roy and some draft picks or prospects.

Free Agency
I think Darcy really wants to improve the team based on what I am reading, but you have to remember we signed some players to what we thought they deserved and then their play fell off...Its not easy to unload Tallinder or Hecht making what theyre makingand playing as poor as they did last season. We do have a cap to stay under. That being said there are some decent players out there that wont command a ton of cash.
06/29/2009 2:01PM
Typical
No action in free agency because we, as per usual, have "great talent coming up through the organization for the future". All of our mediocre-at-best players now are good enough to get by. That's the mentality. Quinn needs to look for a new job. He sucks.
06/29/2009 2:04PM
Heatley's Return
I guarantee you Ottawa would ask for Roy, Myers, this year's first Kassian, and next year's first. No thanks.
06/29/2009 2:38PM
They'll Never Learn
We're going to end up over paying for Stafford and Sekera just like we did with Vanek. $100 it's because of Edmonton again. These guys aren't worth more than $2 mil at this point AT MOST.
06/29/2009 3:12PM
heatley for roy and pick
do it...i cant stand roy and his napolean complex. i also cant stand his stubborness and his crowd-pleasing/coach defying style. he is an immature child. i want him outta here. he can go show off to the teeny boppers from his hometown, ottawa.
06/29/2009 3:14PM
frankie?
yes frankie, im sure ottawa will give away heatley for a 2nd round pick...you are a true buffaloser
06/29/2009 4:41PM
Reiger's not being stubborn he's being honest.
Any Heatley deal would have to contain Vanek or Roy PLUS picks and/or prospects. No thanks. Looking at our salary cap number and considering we have only 3 legitimate D-men signed there is no chance we can sign anyone big after we sign the likes of Sekera and Stafford. UFAs almost never are worth close to the money they get anyway.
06/29/2009 5:21PM
Jesus
why dont the sabres go get jay mckee his contract was just bought out by the blues so they can get him for about 2mil..thats pretty reasonable..
06/29/2009 6:53PM
Regier Translation
"We're too cheap to make a move for anybody good and we're prepared to watch Stafford and Sekera leave rather than pay them what they're worth"
06/29/2009 7:48PM
Heatley
The Sabres are kind of thin at center, so I'd say no to Roy (plus his contract is pretty good). But I'd sign off on Pominville and picks for Heatley in a heartbeat!
06/29/2009 8:44PM
Heatley
I think the Sabres could use him because he's a leader and could make a impact with the young core
06/29/2009 9:22PM
Heatley/Lynch
Imagine Heatley and Marshawn cruising Chippewa...Scary!
06/30/2009 12:07AM
Who Cares
Thank god there is nothing else to do during the week in the winter time, or this boring team would die
06/30/2009 12:25AM
i would totally do Vanek for Heatley
Heatley is a sniper who whould work well with roy -- while vanek gets benched for big game, has yet to put up points to warrent his contract, cant score down the wing, and is only good in front of the net.
06/30/2009 5:58AM
to the idiot above...
Vanek was "benched for big game" ONCE as a rookie on a roster that didn't need him. Sitting out a shift a couple times in February happens to almost every star, including the special Heatley, Alfredsson, Spezza line. You're a dork.
06/30/2009 10:23AM
Same old same old
The Sabres never sign free agents... "Develop the young players"... eventually when they do develop, they fail to re-sign them... right Drew?
06/30/2009 12:33PM
The author calling Dork
You're absolutely right,Vanek's benching lasted only one game(Lindy knows how to push a young players buttons) Heatley to Buffalo for half our roster..Dork...Mckee back in Buffalo....Dork....Imaging Heatyley and LynchBigger Dork...Thank God that all these dork's don't run our teamif they did, move them to Hamilton
06/30/2009 4:14PM
Bring back Rochester
It was a lot more fun when the kids coming up in "development" played down the street in Rochester. This organization is in the toilet.
06/30/2009 5:34PM
Hamilton Sabres
If the Sabres are sold and go to Hamilton is the only way the Sabres fans are going to see the Sabres contend for the Stanley Cup. With the current Sabres brass in charge we will only be contending for the eighth and final playoff position. And the Sabres current owners and management are content with that.
