The NHL's free agent frenzy may not be as frenzied with the salary cap almost staying put, but it begins Wednesday at Noon, and plenty of news is already breaking.
On Monday, three veterans received word of buy-outs, as Peter Schaefer, Brett McLean and Jay McKee all hit the unconditional waiver wire.
According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, there are three teams remaining in the chase to pry Dany Heatley from Ottawa before Noon -- San Jose, Edmonton and the New York Rangers, though there is a $4 million bonus due to Heatley come July 1, which may make the Senators want to hold onto him should a deal not be reached. Heatley has asked to be traded.
Chicago has re-signed 23-year old center Dave Bolland to a five-year deal worth 3.3 million dollars per year. Bolland put up 47 points and registered a plus-19 rating in 81 games last year, adding 12 points in 17 playoff games for the Blackhawks.
Jussi Jokinen has re-upped with Carolina for two years at $1.7 million per campaign, while 38-year old Bill Guerin takes a more than 50 percent pay cut to stay with the World Champion Penguins, one year at $2 million.

We need a gritty veteran this offseason. Losing Drury was huge. If we can replace him with the likes of Knuble, Cole, or Koivu, I can see the Sabres in the playoffs next season.
