So the Sabres took the first step this past weekend in toughening up the team. The drafting of Kassian and Foligno gives them two gritty forwards who are not afraid to drop the gloves. Kassian seems to have an offensive upside as well and may be on his way to being a Lucic kind of player. The only problem is these guys might not be ready for a couple of years. Heading into free agency the Sabres are not set to lose anyone of real significance. Spacek is a nice defenseman but we will be 36 this year and in his three years in Buffalo only last year to me was a good year for him. Key Offensive guys like Vanek, Roy, Connolly and Pominville are all under contract and there are guys like Gerbe who can explode at anytime. Signing Stafford and Sekera seems to be something the Sabres want to do but from what I understand the price currently is too high. Hopefully no other team (The Edmonton Oilers) will try to sign them to a ridiculous offer sheet. Anyway, back to my point. While waiting for guys like Kassian and Foligno to mature the Sabres do need to sign at least one big hitting workhorse to this team. Re-signing Kaleta will be a good start (assuming they do so) but even with him, Mair and Gaustad up front we need one more player that guys are afraid of when they are on the ice.
