The Montreal Canadiens did not wait until the free agency period began Wednesday before making a major deal. The Habs acquired forward Scott Gomez in a trade with the Rangers. Montreal also received forward Tom Pyatt and defenseman Mike Busto. The Rangers receive forward Chris Higgins defensemen Ryan McDonagh and Pavol Valetenko.
The 29-year old Gomez is signed through the 2013-14 season and has a cap hit of $7.35 million next season. Higgins, the major part of the package received by New York, is a restricted free agent who made just $1.7 million last season. He is 26-years old.
