Regier Reacts to Montador, Spacek

nick@wgr550.com

(WGR 550) -- Darcy Regier met with the media after inking Steve Montador to a two-year deal and losing Jaroslav Spacek to the Montreal Canadiens, and made the following points on free agency.

-- The Sabres will not "burn money" like big market clubs i.e. buy out any of their player's contracts.

-- They are attempting to find another puck-moving defenseman.

-- They think a lot of trades that aren't there now will open up once free agency is complete.

-- Mentions Phillip Gogulla, Nathan Gerbe and Tim Kennedy as potential future point men on the power play.

-- Their offer to Spacek started with a three (as in $3 million-point-something, not three years).

-- He was prepared for more big contracts, but still surprised by long-term deals with huge money.

WHATEVER
Regier needs to go, all the teams in our Division improved 10 fold, we will miss the playoffs AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
07/01/2009 6:38PM
Yikes
We, at least Buffalo will get a higher draft pick next year.
07/01/2009 6:43PM
Makes Sense
Why buy out a contract when you can continue to not get your money's worth night in and night out.
07/01/2009 6:55PM
Whatever
Typical Regier Every year he is surprised by contracts, he continually is a day late and a dollar short. Look at the quality players he failed to lock up for four or five years by dragging his feet. McKee,Briere,Drury,Campbell all could have been had if we read the marketplace"his favorite work" correctly.

john pilato,sr.
No identity for the Sabres--skill wins, see Detroit, Pittsburgh, Washington, Carolina, Chicago etc. Regier, as usual out of the loop !! Lindy, move on.
07/01/2009 9:47PM
ugh.....
typical sit on your hands, cant "determine the market", do nothing to improve this team regier!
07/01/2009 10:32PM
stupid!
another blunder by reagier and co. to a confrence rival. thanks chuck in mesa a.z.
07/01/2009 10:38PM
there's the problem!
Darcy was "surprised by long-term deals with huge money." Dude, that's been the norm for the last 3-4 years. Have you been paying attention at all? JEEBUS!
07/01/2009 11:54PM
What ???
Loose a good player, gain a lessor one, and be happy !!!!
07/02/2009 3:20AM
Financial
Well the amount of money burned for long term contracts when looking at the current financial situation. Comparing to last 3-4 years isn't valid.

DULL and BORING
This is another who cares move, just making the motions and being cheap.Your big draft show from a museum kind of somes up the Sabres. What an exciting and full of action place that was.Was their a lady dressed like a librarian telling everyone to Shhhhhh.Watching a Sabres game latley has been like looking at pictures and quietly moving on to the next one and trying to act like you like it.Is their any function in all of sports that is more useless than the NHL draft. It fits Regiers personality perfectly. You pick players that wont be able to play. You can make excuses for years that hes not ready so you wont have to pay him .Then when he is ready to play ,you sign him cheap for two years then when he develops you can let him walk, because he is now thirty and wants to sign for three years. That we all know is the mafia kiss of death for the Sabres.Regier needs to go .Too bad WGR has a contract with the team and has to bite their tounge about this guy
07/02/2009 7:52AM
Looking for a new team
Regier needs to go, drafts are poor at best (how #1 did not make it) trades are poor, and his no/bad moves in the free agency (Montador for Spacek, not about money!!!!)
07/02/2009 9:39AM
Why?
What I don't understand, is even in the speculation leading up to July 1, you never hear that Buffalo is interested, or Buffalo may make an offer to...Do guys not want to play in Buffalo? They just never seem to be in the mix for the Bouwmeester's of the world.
07/02/2009 10:39AM
THINK BEFORE YOU TYPE
LET ME MAKE ONE THING CLEAR, I DO NOT SUPPORT WHAT THE SABRE'S MANAGEMENT DOES. I HOWEVER AM A SMARTER FAN AND HAVE ACTUALLY ANALYZED WHAT TAKE'S PLACE BEFORE BADSHING WHAT THEY DO. Darcy did exactly what he had to do. I wanted Spacek back to move the puck, but for 1 yr. At his age you cannot sign him long term... Have fun with your salary cap next year Montreal. Buffalo has almost 30 million next year in J-POMS ROY VANEK MILLER AND CONNOLLY... THAT IS THEIR CORE PLAYERS WHO THEY FEEL THEY NEED TO KEEP AND WERE WILLING TO PAY. TO SAY THEY ARFE TO CHEAP IS INCORRECT ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK AT THOSE CONTRACTS. They beleive in building from within and have well. Their core developed well and they just can't afford to make a big splash right now. The only way they can sign a big name is to move one of those players, then every fan whining they are cheap would cry and tear him apart for moving a loved player. Realisticly, Darcy has done an incredible job with the cap. He will be the first to admit he should've moved earlier with Campbell Briere and Drury. They all exploded over a 2 year period and you cannot foresee those players improving like they did. If we had one of those contracts those guys signed we would have horrible cap problems. The hawks wanna move Campbells contract, Briere is almost for sure done in Philly, and the Rangers were moving either Drury or Gomez to the first buyer. We have ALOT of solid young nearly NHL ready talent coming up and Darcy knows he is going to have to sign a majority of them within a year, and for the restricted guys now. Hecht and Tallinder are problems, Hank is gone after this year no matter what, and I really think Darcy will do everything in his power to move Hecht once the free agency period slows down. In two weeks I beleive you'll see another tweak to the roster, Hecht hopefully gone and whatever we can get in return will play. I truly wish we were like Philly or the Rangers and could just go sign these huge contracts and be in the news and make those huge splashes but that is not logical in this economy. NONE OF THESE HUGE CONTRACTS FOR LONG YEARS WORK FOR THE TEAM THAT SIGNS THEM. That team might have some immediate upside but in the long run they are screwed. For Philly and the Rangers it is now or never. Look at the Blackhawks they have Kane Toews and Keith to sign soon with no cap room now with Hossa and Campbell both with huge contracts.... too be coninued

CONTINUED
The sabre's have lost some big players but thats cause we produce alot of good players. We have a ton of talent in the wings, hopefully they can step up and play the type of hockey Lindy wants them to play. The NHL coming out of the lockout tried making a league that was fast and skillful so the Sabre's tried to do that as well, the nhl didn't stick with that very long and its taking alot of time for the sabre's to adjust their entire roster. MAKE SURE HECHT AND TALLINDER ARE GONE BUY THE END OF THIS YEAR, then go from there, with their dead money gone and our core players getting older we should be fine.
07/02/2009 10:48AM
you are all wrong
Free Agency does not work!!!!! How many big name free agent signings from the first day of free agency have lead their teams to the Stanley Cup. All these teams signing long term contracts are going to be in a rude awakening next year when the cap goes down. Take Chicago for example. Now that Hossa is signed for 12 years, signing both toews and Kane next summer will be difficult. And for all those that say the other teams in the division got better 10 fold, take a look at Montreal. Yea, they have cammalleri and gomez, but they lost their two leaders in koivu and komisarek. Are you telling me that hal gill is an upgrade over komisarek. the habs def is decimated. To sum this all up, the teams that lose on the first day of free agency win.

How To Fix The Sabres!
Someone go over to CC of Buffalo on the driving range u will find Larry Quinn take the golf club out of his hand! Show him a cell phone explain the him how it works.... A.E. How to push numbers and send calls explain to him we'll he trying to go below par he is taking the whole Buffalo Sabres team with him!!! And STOP buying tickets to that joke of a hockey team!
07/02/2009 11:35AM
FREE AGENCY
For all the haters who want a huge contract now look at the teams that win. Can we all agree that Detroit the Penguins and probably Washington will be good for a long time.... NAME ME ONE PLAYER ON THEIR ROSTERS THAT THEY HAVE SIGNED 4 YEARS 5 MILLION A YEAR THAT WAS THROUGH FREE AGENCY??????????? NONE.... You draft well build from within and sign your core to long term deals. LIKE THE SABRES HAVE DONE... Unfortunatley we did not have Number 1 overall picks like Washington and Pittsburgh. Detroits drafts are just amazing Datsyuk and Zetterberg in the late rounds were amazing picks. The Sabre's draft picks haven't been amazing but they have been solid and we have a ton of young potential. For the whiners out there the future is bright and quit getting so greedy we had 2 good runs recently and more in the future, enough with the wah we aren't amazing every year wah. Look at Pitt and Washington they were terrible rebuilt and now are amazing.. Be thankful that we didn't have to be completely in the toilet for 5 years while we were rebuilding like others... The future is bright.

What a Joke!
Brian Gionta woul dhave looked good in a Sabres uniform. The guy was born in Rochester and would have work the sabres jersey with pride. Instead he is playing for the Habs! Conservative GM's produce conservative teams. Everyone else in the Eastern Conference is getting better except Buffalo. It will be at least another 3 years until this team has a clear chance at making the playoffs.
07/02/2009 4:35PM
I want to care but I am bored with this team
That is what the Sabres have been making me feel like since we lost player 1 & player 2. they are getting worse every year and do one or two moves that are boring & do not work I can't take watching this team anymore. I turn off game after first period and I have never done that before. I don't know what they need to do but I want to be excited about this team again. But it is not going to happen until they change a few players. Look at the Bills I don't think they will do much but at least they have my interest & tried something to get better. I don't need a big name but I do need someone who will give me hope & excitement maybe a player who is talented and a leader. U can draft your core but u need to add those key players in free agency that will put you over the top. We keep subtracting instead of adding losing players and never replacing with equal or better talent but don't worry there is always lots of guys we drafted who will come up and be our next superstar. Whatever I can't take this anymore see ya when we get a real general manager in town.
07/02/2009 4:49PM
even i can see!
all i am is a 29yr old factory worker and even i can see that the sabres are merley treading water while everyone else is improving. how can regier say with a stright face that he thinks this team can be a contender....not even close
07/02/2009 4:55PM
who wants ice time?
i have never seen a team let go so many players that have been the leading ice time getter the season before, and really do nothing to fill that spoy except put someone who is not ready or capable of doing so.
07/02/2009 5:52PM
Relax
First, Gionta is the exact thing they don't want. A small skill player who like Briere is not as effective as he was after the lockout. As for not immediately signing a big free agent, they have a lot of young players who are going to need a contract in a couple years, therefore if they overpay now how will they afford those players when the salary cap goes down? The thing they need to do is both Hecht and Tallinder and allow the young talent they have to develop in the NHL not the minors.
07/02/2009 6:06PM
Seriously?!?!?
I say we start a petition and call for Regier to step down! This guy SUCKS. By the way, how are we going to stop Montreal now? Or the Rangers? Or, well anyone. Here's to golf next playoff season!!!!
07/02/2009 8:05PM
Draft
I hope the Sabres can step up and be the best losers in the NHL!!Go Sabres!!1 pick in 2010 Draft!!!!
07/03/2009 12:19AM
im not surprised, this is buffalo, the city thats full of disappointments
just because larry quinn owns a little bit of the sabres doesn't mean he knows what hes doing. Hes screwed up 3 years in a row now, my god im 17 years old and from tonawanda and i could do a better job even without getting paid. If we were smart we'd bring back Mckee and give him a 2nd chance but of course we won't, Buffalo is the entire NHL farm team basically. This is a joke. Once we get rid of Miller don't expect a good hockey team in buffalo.
07/03/2009 2:42AM
Not Shocked
Darcy does nothing again and continues to make excuses as to why they did nothing again. When will Larry and Darcy ever learn, Spacho for Montador? I like Montador but how does that make us better? Same movie differant day
07/03/2009 1:12PM
Absolutely dumb
What a jacka** reiger is, he might as well get rid of Miller to while he's at it!
07/03/2009 6:43PM
WOWWWW
Spacek will now be on a rival like briere and drury. can we bring Mckee Back just for the leadership??
07/06/2009 10:17AM
We need to change the culture...
I appreciate what Quinn and Regier have done for the organization, but we need managing partners and GMs who are PROVEN winners. There is a defeatist attitude with management and it needs to stop. I say keep Lindy and thank Golisano for saving the teamfrom moving, but Quinn and Regier have to go. Montreal, Detroit and other proven winners would not put up with this. Buffalo should start acting like a winner, instead of settling for less.
