Kovalev To Ottawa; Beauchemin Toronto Bound

A new hue of red.

Alex Kovalev signed with Ottawa on Monday.  The forward got a two-year contract from the Senators.

Kovalev was one of the best remaining unrestricted free agents.  He led the Habs in goals and points last season.  He was the MVP of the All-Star Game.

The Canadians have had an active off-season.  Montreal has signed former Sabre Jaroslav Spacek and traded for Scott Gomez.

It became clear that Kovalev wasn’t factoring in the team’s future plans.  Monday morning GM Bob Gainey told a Montreal radio station that had not planned on offering Kovalev another extension.

The Toronto Maple Leafs add to their blue line once again. They add former Anaheim defenseman Francois Beauchemin for the next three years. Beauchemin will be paid $3.8 million per season. He joins newly acquired Mike Komisarek and incumbent Tomas Kaberle as the Leafs' top defensemen.

improvements
i feel like all the teams in the divison are trying to get better minus the sabres and maybe the bruins but they were pretty good to start with....what's the deal

waiting sucks!! Darcy learn that!!
A guy who kicks our behind when he plays us leaves one Rival for another..it would have been worse if he went to MapleLeafs who got better with Beauchioum Grrr i hate the slow methodical approach and self imposed cap we deal with!!

Sickening...
This inactivity is absolutely sickening... when are we going to get in the game?? Darcy and Co. act like a kid who hides in the bushes on his way to school because he's afraid of a bully coming along to steal away his lunch money. Yeah we'll get to school allright, but late, penniless, and hungry. Get with it Sabres! Take a stand and DO SOMETHING; right or wrong, at least the fans would respect the effort.

Sens can have him for 5 million a year
I am like everyone else I want to see a signing and different faces but a guy like Kovalev who doesnt always give 100% is what the sabres are trying to get away from...I would rather see them get koivu who is a leader and gives it his all then another guy like kovalev that we will complain about when he disappears for long stretches.

$$$
I understand how everyone wants to improve the team but honestly we need to do so via trading player for player or players for picks to clear up cap space. Everyone says we are cheap and dont spend money but im pretty sure we are right near the cap every year. Im happy we dont put out ridiculous contracts for free agents because we messed up so many already that we cant afford it. especially when the cap goes down next year.

I gotta bad feeling about this...
At the rate all the other NE teams are getting better, the Sabres dreams of making the playoffs next year makes me want to pull a Jim Mora "Playoffs? PLAYOFFS?"

Free Agency is starting to become a joke
I love how Free Agency just sky-rockets a player's value and Beauchemin is a prime example. He would have been a great pick up back when Anaheim won the cup in 06-07. However the following year his production went down (talking /-) and then he got injured last year and missed a major portion of the season, wow that sounds like a great investment for 3 years. Sounds like he could be more of a flash in the pan to me. When I watch the list at TSN of players signed there really isn't one that I sit here and say "wow if we only signed him". Free Agency in the NHL is turning into what the NFL has, average players getting huge contracts just because they are perceived to be the "best available". I agree a move needs to be made but give me one like Rivet's last year rather than this nonsense. And last time I checked, they have plenty of time to make a trade.

RELAX
I am sooooo happy we don't have a GM who responds to fan pressure. I'm not any more satisfied than anyone else with our results the last 2 years, but we have some incredible young talent locked up now (isn't that what we all said he wouldn't do when Danny & Drury left...) along with a top 10 goaltender. This team just needs to add some toughness and leadership - something they took a step towards with the draft and Montador and something I don't believe Darcy is done addressing - the season opens in 3 months folks - relax!!!) Oh yeah, and to the dude cracking on WGR's grammar... really guy?
07/06/2009 10:07PM
RFA's...
To everyone talking about this cap space and self-imposed cap, are you forgetting about Stafford, Sekera & Macarthur??? None of the 3 is signed yet and we are already pushing 50 million now!! Until Lydman and Tallinder come off the books or get moved dollar for dollar, we're pretty handcuffed.
07/06/2009 11:35PM
It's not the spending
It's not the spending that is the Sabres problems...it's the players that Regier has spent the money on that is the problem. Yes the Sabres are with in the realm of the cap limit but they have money tied up in the wrong guys. That alone would get most GMs fired!
07/06/2009 11:46PM
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i like darcy. BUT this team as of right now is not competitive to even compete for the playoffs .If the sabres are going to try to build just within than i want to see it this year. if you just going to throw money around to the guys we have now just to have a team, why bother. move than!!!!!!! get rid of the crap players! This is junk if any of you think that no one wants them, im sure someone would take them for like a 7th round pic.look at the avalible free agents. !!!!!!!!!!! god i dont even know why i bother loving this team and supporting them!

FA
I really wish something would happen already a trade or something, the thing that bugs me the most is how darcy holds on to these players until they have no value left. Max is a prime example and the same thing is now happening with Hecht. trade him and Tallinder for somebody that can lead this team or some toughness. Having the young talent is good, but with the exception of maybe Myers and Weber I don't think any of them are ready. I think Gerbe got a wake up call in the few games he played with the Sabres and Kennedy and Grangani might need one more year. We need something to help this team now or we'll be looking up @ Boston, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto this year.
07/07/2009 7:48AM
Looking forward
Hey we have Gerbe and Kennedy to look forward to. Bring your high powered binoculars folks to see them. Yes they are fast but little munchkins that will get obliterated in the corners. Anyone else tired of having the nicest team in the NHL. Teams should hate coming to Buffalo to play. Instead it's like Club Med. Nice!!

Complacency
Cheapness isn't the problem with the Sabres, complacency is. I don't want to hear about injuries, we straight up weren't good enough last year and so far this off-season we've gotten worse (losing Spacek and gaining Montador). If Regier doesn't makeat least two trades to change up that locker room, I am going to be angry. The Leafs are going to be MUCH better this season, are we?
07/07/2009 11:19AM
if you always do what you've always done...
memo to the sabres - everyone around you is getting better and we are looking to gerbe and kennedy. hello lottery pick! WGR needs to act professional and give the sabres brass the same treatment that they give the bills (namely the donoughoe regieme). just because the sabres do interviews, and golf in their tournament, etc, by no means says that they are free from getting pounded over the airwaves. finally they are giving them some grief, but i really think its time to start calling for heads in upper management (yes - i mean you larry and darcy).

Toronto is passing you!!!

The Leafs already did. Pay attention!!!

RE: It's not the spending
You're absolutely right but look at the timing of most of the signings. They were right around the serious run at the cup in 06-07. People clamored for Lydman and Tallinder (as well as others like Afinogenov, Connolly, Kotalik) to get deals after 05-06 playoffs to get us back there and now we've been stuck with them. And somehow Regier is supposed to trade them? Based on what value? For Lydman and Tallinder, the only production they had was in that one playoff series against the Sens. We got burned signing fringe players to make us "four lines deep" (even Lydman and Tallinder were the third defensive pair their big run) and the reason Regier is still here is because management understands what happened (and who knows, may have helped in screwing this up). As for Hecht, the year he got the extension he was playing great (20 goals, 20 assists) at center when Connolly was out. He had a horrible year last year but usually he is a consistent 50 pt 10 player so to expect them to cut bait on him after one bad year is a bit much, also seeing how he still has 3 yrs at around $10 mil left on his deal I doubt there would be many takers. There are moves to be made here but most likely not with those guys. You're probably going to see guys like MacArthur, Paille, Stafford, and Mancari be the center pieces of the trade bait and who knows what return they would bring.
07/07/2009 1:08PM
What Is Wrong With Beauchemin???
Did Regier ever give that an attempt??? What is this jerk doing not getting him??? Toronto is gonna be good!!! They ain't even close to being done yet. Wait!!!
07/07/2009 2:47PM
does darcy collect a paycheck during offseason?
I certainly hope not. This guy doesn't do a thing, oh ya, he does SabresLunch during the time he is supposed to be trying to lure UFA's to Buffalo. It is absurd to think this guy gets paid to run this team. I could do a better job than this.
07/07/2009 5:57PM
RE RE: Its not the spending
You make valid points but it's the GMs job to give the money to the right players and Regier failed miserably. The money he paid Connolly, Hecht, Max, Tallinder, Lydman, and Yes Vanek (because he panicked and had to) they could have kept Briere and Drury and actually a couple of the above guys mentioned at lower salaries. The point here is that many of the signings came as Regier and Quinn panicked after losing Briere and Drury. You need to have a constant pulse on the players on the team as a GM and it's clear that Darcy has flatlined.
07/07/2009 7:05PM
I hear Sabres tried to get Beauchemin
He just wanted to play for Burke. So they tried. So we'll have Myers & Weber. We'll be OK
07/08/2009 10:00AM
Trying doesn't count
I hear they tried to trade for Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, and Roberto Luongo. Big deal if they tried. The bottom line is our roster wasn't good enough last season and thus far, in the offseason we've gotten worse. There are good players available asfree agents, players that can help us. Why are we sitting on the sidelines, again? If we can't afford free agents, why aren't we wheeling and dealing to make our team better?
07/08/2009 10:55AM
Just Face It
The Sabres are gonna suck! Can't wait!
