Matt Ellis is staying with Buffalo. The Sabres signed the 27 year-old free agent forward to a one-year deal. Ellis skated in 45 games last year with Buffalo, recording 7 goals and 5 assists.
Ellis was claimed off of waivers from the Los Angeles Kings by Buffalo last season. For all of the latest Sabres and NHL news throughout the offseason, stay tuned to WGR - Sports Radio 550 and WGR550.com.
Good move. He showed everybody up last year with is constant effort and toughness. He'll do well on the 4th line with Gaustad and Kaleta
07/09/2009 7:09PM
wasted cap space
he didnt even play last year and was a healthy scratch... he doesent fight, hes not a locker room guy, and hes not adding anything to the team. What the hell are you doing Darcy!!!!!
07/09/2009 7:26PM
Good Guy to Have in Portland
I hope they didnt sign him to have a roster spot on this team. The only way I want to see him is if there are injuries because both Gerbe and Kennedy need to be on this team they already shown what they can do in the minors lets see what they can do withthe big club.
07/09/2009 7:35PM
Great!!
Matt Ellis is so gritty he is exactly what the sabres need no more of the skilled, finesse soft players.
07/09/2009 7:38PM
Good deal
this was a decent signing. Since he is a very physical guy with great character and great work ethic. they should have done the deal sooner. What is Darcy thinking?
07/09/2009 7:38PM
boring
do something interesting darcy, matt ellis is not bring a title back to buffalo
07/09/2009 7:56PM
BIG MOVE...WOOPIE DOOO
Darcy...You Suck
07/09/2009 8:45PM
joke
this organization is a joke
07/09/2009 9:18PM
how much
obviously not that flashy move the haters all want but adds some gritty depth to the F corps... anyone know how much we gave him??
07/09/2009 9:19PM
whoop-dee-do
just what we need, another terrible player
07/09/2009 9:26PM
WOW
This will put is over, we even report this crap
07/09/2009 10:02PM
Good Signing
Ellis was underrated last year, love his work ethic
07/09/2009 10:47PM
Oh yeah
This move seals the deal of all I wanted the sabres too get.can you say playoff team definitly!!!!!!!!!ha
07/09/2009 10:49PM
HEY DARCY!!!
STOP FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOUR PLAYERS!!!! LET THEM GO
07/09/2009 10:54PM
that's it???
i like ellis but come on!!!! we need to do more were standind still while everyone else the east is improving or is already better than us!!!
07/09/2009 11:47PM
maybe
lindy will play him....
07/10/2009 12:02AM
A Starting Point...
Good to see they signed Ellis. Here's a guy who is all hustle, work ethic and shows up every night. A good team guy! What we need. This is a staring point for Regier but not enough....
07/10/2009 5:00AM
No need to play the season.....
Oh yeah! That's what I'm talking about!
Huge signing here. Cup time for the Sabres!
I guess we were all wrong about management. They sure showed us.
07/10/2009 8:08AM
10th place again
Sabres follow Bills philosophy - continuity instead of improvement
07/10/2009 9:07AM
Solid Guy
Not really what I had in mind in regard to a FA pick-up. I feel if Darcy would have signed Koivu and then slide Ellis in he would have been applauded. He's pretty much damned if he does damned if he doesn't at this point.
07/10/2009 9:26AM
Wow on Ellis
This can't be our big signing this off season. Can it?
I'll go balistic if they sign Peters. Tanguay is still out there as well as others that are more useful.
07/10/2009 9:33AM
.....
i like the signing, i like that there isn't a secure spot for kennedy and gerbe so hopefully it will make them work harder
07/10/2009 9:43AM
I Give Up!!!
I'll sit out the season as will many. Watch the attendance figure at the bottom of the game stats in the Buffalo News. It won't be 18,690!
07/10/2009 9:57AM
Hey whiners and compaliners....
To everyoone out here who is whining and compalining. Ellis is a depth guy. Every team has them. I'm not expecting any more than what he got last year. I did like what I saw but you people are moron's. Why don't you people cry and complain some more or I know start campaigning to get Heatley. Idiots
07/10/2009 10:20AM
Bad timing
Here again is a signing that makes some sense...veteran...emergency use...etc. But like Montador the perception is skewed because the Sabres have not pulled the trigger on a real impact signing or trade. Montador and Ellis are good role players, who would help in specific areas, but neither is the team changing player that most Sabre fans are looking for.
Unfortunately the signings generate frustration often aimed (wrongly!!!) at their abilities. Good role player signing...but much more is needed!!!
07/10/2009 10:38AM
TO THE AHL
Ellis better have a 2 way contract
07/10/2009 10:39AM
Any more details?
Is this a 2way deal? How much $
07/10/2009 11:38AM
Is Peters Next?
Why blow the streak of embarrassing moves!
Sign Peters A.S.A.P.!
07/10/2009 11:39AM
Love the re-signing
It's funny how people want the Sabres to get bigger, tougher, and gritty. Then when they keep a guy like Ellis, they get bashed because he has no skill. Love his work ethic. There is no need for a 2-way deal because this year he won't be pushed to the minors to keep spots open for guys like Kotalik and Afinogenov. Now all we need is a decent 2nd/3rd line veteran center, for depth *cough* Connolly *cough*, and to me they'd seem done.
07/10/2009 12:32PM
Great!
Ellis made every one on the ice better last season. Good signing, hope to see him in Buffalo.
07/10/2009 1:36PM
whiners
why does everyone in buffalo whine? ellis is a role player. thats ROLE, not roll (not like the egg rolls you slobs shove dwn your throat at your overpaid union job lunch break). everyteam has role players, they are just as essential as the overhyped. overpaid komisarek so many of you idiots wanted on this team.
i cant stand sabres fans anymore, you people are morons. every move the sabres make is wrong according to you hockey encyclopedias out there.
gimme ellis any day of the week...he has something to prove and will give 100% every night in any situation he's thrown in.
get a clue you pathetic, whiney, degenerate buffalosers.
07/10/2009 1:54PM
small but good move
People shouldnt expect a lot from him but he showed me a lot more than i thought he had last year being in and out of the lineup.. thats tough to do in a streaky sport like hockey. Im sure he signed the league minimum or pretty close to. def wont hurt the team... only add the depth and grit we need. too shay
07/10/2009 3:24PM
4th Line
Ellis showed thru his constant effort that he can play and hopefully make other players play hard thru his example. I like a 4th line of Ellis , Mair, Kaleta. This signing was expected but Ellis will not win the Sabres games by his scoring. Sabres still need a vet center with scoring ability.
07/10/2009 3:26PM
sabres are lucky
wgr carries their games or they would be clobbered by all the hosts. Now they all know to keep their mouths shut and just look on the bright side of every stupid move they make. They are a joke. Let's just pray they miss the playoffs one more year. Imagine if they squeak into 8th in the East and re-sign Darcy and Lindy. Then we are in trouble. All we here from Darcy is excuses why he can't make any moves no wonder it trickles down to the players. Losing is acceptable here. Please just don't start the season good and get these morons new contracts we need to start over.
07/10/2009 3:48PM
ellis good move
signing ellis was a good move. i would like to see darcy do more via a trade. i know he doesn't like signing pricey free agents.
07/10/2009 4:49PM
sabres are lucky guy
i dont love wgr but i think nick medola said it this morning even. if training camp is starting and the roster looks like this you can yell but the offseason isnt over yet.
07/10/2009 7:36PM
what the #@%$ ?
why ellis instead of trying to bring back one of the best shot blocking and toughest defenseman we ever had in jay mcee ? we could have gotten him at a cheap price and toughened up our defense but i guess that would have hurt our image of sissies on skates !
07/10/2009 9:46PM
Okay
I am sure this is a nice signing but there are tons of good players being signed for reasonable money and the Sabres are stuck with the same slugs we had last year. I am not expecting miracles but it sure looks like that are not going to do much!
07/10/2009 10:04PM
Read This
I've just read the above and this is what I saw: "Depth guy", "role player", "great fourth liner", "gritty effort", "shows up..." Yeah all of the above may be true, but what good is signing a "support" type player if he has NOTHING TO SUPPORT?! There are a few types of players, and we've seen them all. Gritty guys who can't score (got them), finesse guys who can score but have no grit (had them), and the guy that the NHL is now patterned after, the guy the demonstrates both. THIS is the kind of guy we need, and it takes some guts and some cash to get them here. Unfortunately, the Sabres have neither. They have no cash because they hold onto these career guys, waiting for YEARS for them to become the player they want. Unless this team makes a major move or two, we will be staring up at the rest of the league, I guarantee it.
07/11/2009 10:55AM
YAWN!!!!!!!!!1
Buffalo economics at it's best---mountadour and ellis woooooooo!!! time to get the hell out of this piss poor city!!
07/11/2009 5:28PM
Darcy
is such a lame GM. Why he gets such a break around here is beyond me. He sucks. It's always we can't do this and can't do that. Why not Detroit gets it done every year. NJ does too. Get rid of this jerk and his stupid glasses.
