Maybin signs

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- The Buffalo Bills finally have their new defensive end under contract: Aaron Maybin is a Buffalo Bill with a five-year deal. ESPN reports that Maybin's deal is worth $25 million. Maybin will not travel with the team to Green Bay and will begin practice Monday.

Maybin was selected with the No. 11 pick in April's NFL Draft.

The first question of course to the DE was what took so long? "It's pretty easy to try to finger point and do all the that kind of stuff, but truthfully, the past is the past. I'm here, ready to play football and I'm here ready to get things going and have a great preseason and let that momentum carry me into the season."

Maybin missed all of St.John Fisher training camp and said, "It's been hard. Anytime your teammates are out practicing and you're not able to be out there with them, it's always going to be a difficult process to deal with but the only thing I could really do was just continue to keep myself in shape and continue to keep working out to be sure that when my time did come, I would be able to keep things moving and make a contribution to the team."

Maybin did thinks the three weeks he has until opening night will be enough to get him ready. Unlike Jairus Byrd, Maybin did practice with the team through OTA's and Mini Camp.

Maybin did not get to a point in this process where he told his agent that he had to get this done. Maybin said, "You hire people like that to do a job and you have to let both sides do their job and you have to continue to have faith that things are going to work themselves out so, as frustrating as it all is, you really don't let it all get to you, you let things work themselves out."

Maybin got really upset a few weeks ago and stop using Twitter and other means to communicate. He said, "When some people don't understand the way the business is and when some people don't understand the ins and outs of it, it can be difficult to always give the same answers to everybody so we really felt on both sides that it would be better if we allowed both parties to work out the contract on their own in their own due time and for me to stay away from all the questions."

Maybin showed up with a new haircut which was shaved on the sides. One side had a bad imitation of the Bills logo and the other side had the numbers 58 and 78 for himself and Bruce Smith.

In other news, the Bills have also released DL Ventrell Jenkins from injured reserve and S Antwain Spann has been waived.

DEFENSIVE END AARON MAYBIN

Press Conference - Friday, August 21, 2009

On the delay in signing his contract:

It's pretty easy to try to finger point and do all that kind of stuff,
but truthfully the past is the past. I'm here, I'm ready to play
football and I'm ready to get things going with this preseason and have
a great preseason and let them momentum carry me into the season.

On if it was tough to wait around the last four weeks:

Of course. It was very tough. Anytime that you're a part of a team and
your teammates are out there practicing and you're not able to be out
there with them, it's always going to be a difficult process to deal
with. But the only thing that I could really do was just continue to
keep myself in shape, continue working out and continue to make sure
that when my time did come, and I was able to get here, that I was going
to be able to keep things moving and make a contribution to the team.

On being able to start practicing on Monday:

Yeah I'll be practicing on Monday.

On making the trip to Green Bay:

No. I won't be.

On his teammates being helpful:

Anytime, especially being that I'm a young guy, this is my rookie year
and I've never been in this position before having to deal with the
business side of things. It definitely always helps to have your
teammates rally around you. They've been through all these situations
before, they know the nature o f the business, they know how things go,
and it's very good to be able to have them rally around you and to be
able to lend their support and give their advice in times like this.

On what he thinks he missed not being at training camp:

Obviously you miss a lot. There's a lot of catching up that I have to
do, but we still have three weeks to go, three weeks of preparation,
three weeks that I have to make do of and to really do the best that I
can with. I'm really excited about getting back out there, getting back
on the field working with my coaching staff and my teammates again and I
think I'll be fine.

On making impact in the first regular season game:

Of course. I think that if I come in and I continue to work hard as I've
always done and I continue to allow my coaches to coach me to the best
of their abilities. They already have a plan set in place of how they
want to do things, so if I just follow the direction and the advice they
give me, I'll be fine.

On signing his contract this week:

It's always a tough situation, but you hire people like that to do a job
and really you have to let both sides do their job. You have to continue
to have faith that things are going to work themselves out. So as
frustrating as it all is, you really don't let it get to you. You really
try to just let things work themselves out and all you can really focus
on is making sure you're ready to contribute when the time comes.

On if he was frustrated with the critics:

Yeah.  When some people don't understand the way the business is and
when some people don't understand the ins and outs of it, it can be
sometimes difficult to have to always give the same answers to
everybody. We really felt as though on both sides that it would be
better if we just allow both parties to work out the contract in our own
due time and for me to really just stay away from all the questions and
all that kind of stuff and just let them do their jobs.

On his current feelings:

Ecstatic. Overjoyed. Whatever you want to call it... that's me. I've
been smiling from ear to ear for the entire day. Ever since I got off
the plane it's just been great to be able to get back up here. It's been
great to be able to spend some time with my teammates and they're
getting ready to leave and head out to Green Bay. It hurts that I'm not
going to be able to go out there with them, but at least I'm back here,
out here in Orchard Park, getting ready to start up again and I'm really
excited about that.

On receiving any teasing from teammates today:

A lot of them kind of had a couple jokes and made references to the new
hairdo, but that was about it. We've all been trying to keep in contact
as much as possible for the entire duration of camp and all that kind of
stuff. It's just good to be able to see those guys again. You build a
little bit of camaraderie with them, with the guys that you play with
and it's always good to be able to spend time together.

On if he went to today's walk-thru:

No, actually I was upstairs for the most part from the time that I flew
right in. We came right in, went upstairs and met with the front office.
But I was able to go down as soon as they were finished and I was able
to sit down in the locker room for a little bit with the guys.

On when he felt that he was getting really close to signing:

When I got on the plane (laughs). This whole time, if you really get
caught up in all the he says, she says, and all the kind of stuff you
read on the internet, it's easy to get caught up in stories and all that
kind of stuff so really I was just like 'Alright. I know if I'm getting
on this plane that means we must be pretty close', so I was pretty happy
when that time came.

On when he boarded the plane:

This morning at about 7:30.

On being excited about his number and his new hairdo:

Yeah. I've got two numbers. I did carve my number in there but also in
respect to Bruce Smith being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year, I
figured I'd show him so love in the hair cut as well.

where's your...
who gives a crap choice on the poll?
08/21/2009 9:33AM
Have fun chasing punts!
You went from favorite to start to special teamer pretty quick(not that there's anything wrong with the special teams... they build character)
08/21/2009 9:35AM
hope best of luck
Well since he's a rookie, you can't really say oh we gotta trade him, but there's still other rookies unsigned, so hopefully they'll have there contracts signed sooner, also. But in Maybin's case he's going to have to bust his butt off for 2 weeks, for missing the whole training camp session.
08/21/2009 9:38AM
ABOUT TIME!
I'M HAPPY BOTH SIDES FINALLY GOT THIS TAKEN CARE OF. NOW WE CAN FOCUS ON WINNING GAMES. I DONT THINK THE TIME MISSED WILL BE MUCH OF A FACTOR UNLESS THEY HAD PLANS TO PLAY HIM I THE LB SPOT. IF HE IS ONLY A SITUATIONAL PASS RUSHER, I DONT THINK THE TIME MISSED WILL HAVE MUCH OF AN EFFECT.
08/21/2009 9:41AM
Yippeee.
ooooh, a 5 year deal, so hold on... let me see... he shouldn't be holding out again until 2011!
08/21/2009 11:39AM
healthy scratch
let him rot and leave hime off the active roster for 4 weeks to teach him a lesson... Chris Ellis should be the starter.
08/21/2009 11:45AM
so soon you forget
2011...ha! Peters held out and he was under contract. We will be lucky to make it to 2011!
08/21/2009 11:54AM
Not hsi fault
I love how people are already judging him...hello people ITS HIS AGENT YOU SHOULD BE MAD AT, MAYBIN IS NOT AT FAULT FOR THE HOLDOUT
08/21/2009 11:55AM
ITS HIS AGENT
Maybins agent and crabtree was the cause of all this, don't hold this against maybin
08/21/2009 12:06PM
DORKS
if he gets 8 sacks this year, you people will be the first ones to run out and buy his jersey...stop hating and just enjoy the Bills. Stop worrying about his money.
08/21/2009 12:10PM
Why the hate?
What's the big deal, he wanted a decent contract I don't hold that against the guy. You can't compare that to Peters who HAD a contract. Why in the world would we trade him? Let him get in a play. So he missed some training camp...hmmm "Maybin, go get the guy with the ball" I hope he can learn that in 2 weeks!

Please, folks. Use correct punctuation and grammar. And take the damned CAPS LOCK off. :)
08/21/2009 1:33PM
Training Camp Missed
I vaguely remember some brand new Hall of Fame defensive end, it had a propensity for missing training camp. Let's just hope that is not all that Maybin can do like Bruce!
08/21/2009 2:05PM
Finally
Maybin was crying during the Hall of Fame game? Give me a break. He could of signed if he was that upset.
08/21/2009 2:41PM
it IS his fault
ok, there's NO WAY he gets 8 sacks this year, first of all. and second, his agent isnt holding a gun to his head telling him he cant sign. he can tell his agent to make sure he is signed for training camp, or (novel idea) he can fire his agent and hire one that will get him signed on time. seriously, the agent works for the player, not the other way around. dont blame the agent
08/21/2009 3:38PM
5 years?
well you wont have to worry about him holding out again with the bills because he'll be playing in toronto by then.
08/21/2009 3:59PM
both are to blame
The agent's job is to get a ton of money for his client. The agent doesn't care how long it takes - he gets his percentage cut anyway. However he does work for the client. If Maybin wanted to play that bad he could have said, give up $1 million over freaking five years, tell them we'll take $24 million, and get me on the field. We'll never know if he tried to do that - and if he did, obviously the agent would try to talk him out of it. I'd blame Maybin a lot less if he said "I thought about taking less money, but all my advisors convinced me it wasn't in my best interest".
08/21/2009 4:19PM
How many?
How many of you have been through contract negotiations? Yeah that's right ZERO!! Stop complaining and enjoy the fact we still have a team morons!
08/21/2009 6:04PM
Ah,
whoever said Chivalry was dead should come to this message board, for confirmation of course...
08/21/2009 11:30PM
Holdout? Not really.
He didn't have a contract. I'd rather he wait now than get a crappy contract and actually holdout later. This was the best way, right now. Hopefully the league will consider a rookie salary cap.
08/22/2009 12:50AM
OK, Here's what happened...
Trip to ol' barber shop in the ol' neighborhood while doing some soul-searching...new hairdo...looks in mirror...realizes he needs to sign that contract so he can afford somebody who can actually draw a Bills logo with clippers........I love the intentions of the 'do. That really shows that he (at the very least) felt like he had to do SOMETHING to show his sorrow for this holdout. Can't wait to see what he can do on the field. Agents are ruining sports and the lack of any kind of salary cap for NFL rookies is giving agents way too much leverage. NFL, please do something about it!
08/22/2009 3:04AM
Lookin' Fresh
Hopefully he didn't spend too much of that contract on that haircut.
08/22/2009 10:24AM
Wow cut the kid a break!
There is not a person on this post who would tell their agent to take less money to get into camp on time. If Maybin blows out his knee year one he has nothing. I admit i was getting a little nervous about this situation but i dont want to hear anyone say he should have fired his agent or taken less money to be in camp on time. If you had everyone around you saying your worth so much money and your co-workers supported you there is no way you say no to more money. Now as he said its all in the past and if Maybin lights it up the next couple of years all will be forgiven. I believe #78 missed training camp all the time? Lets play some football!
08/22/2009 10:59AM
Hair Cut
Is that his cap number he has shaved into the side of his head?
08/22/2009 1:06PM
Maybin bust
Everyone knows this kid is a bust like many of Modraks picks. For Mendola to say he's better than Freeny is unreal to me
08/23/2009 12:48PM
Problem Solved
Two things would solve this problem, a rookie salary cap and giving players the option to attend training camp if they are in a holdout. Since a holdout like this only hinders the players first year, and I think in this situation Maybin would have taken that option. Pre-season games would be off limits, but at least offer the player a chance to go through training camp so he isn't as far behind as he would be with a total hold out. Then if a deal isn't done by the regular season, then they would have to be away from the team.
08/23/2009 9:40PM
re: wow etc.
someone said "you'll be buying his jersey after he gets 8 sacks" A. no and B. his getting 8 sacks is his %$#@# job. He owes us 8 sacks at this point. With guaranteed money, signing bonuses on top of his salary he must do his job now, which doesn not require me making any additional purchases. IF he someone manages to get 8 sacks I will be mildly satisfied and that's about the best this guy will probably do at this point. If he wants to turn into a hero throw in a lot of batted balls and a freak interception return for a touchdown (in short play like Darryl Talley) The PR blaming Crabtree.... enough. 99 percent of the other draftees signed before you. So none of this "How many of you have ever been through contract negotiations?" And the "everyone's telling you you're worth more" defense is no defense at all, because he's not. And if one of those people is Lavar Arrington I'm going to start to question where the answers are coming from. He'll have that haircut gone in 3 days by the way. See how fast it goes. This guys a rookie hold out and all some people can think is "give him a break." Why? Why? Like it or not your tax money is helping to fund that stadium. Give everyone a break. The last person who needs a break is the guy who play a game for a living, escaped from college loans with a free education, and just signed a million dollar contract. 8 sacks and I'll give you a 6 month break... but I still aint buying that jersey.
08/23/2009 9:46PM
other than...
a rookie salary cap (which I don't see happening until the leagues starts losing money.... or making a lot less) is for your team to trade down. If I were the Bills I would be fishing for deals on 2nd-4th rounders. If you're cursed with a pick in the top 10-15 because of a losing season get a late rounder and a second rounder. There are almost 50 guys on a team. One guy in the first round Rarely makes that big of a difference. And many of the guys come out of the wood work in the late rounds or are bumping around NFL Europe somewhere right now. Relying on one guy to fix the franchise is a terrible strategy. Just ask the Lions.

Alexander Ovechkin was suspended for two games for his hit on Brian Campbell. Your thoughts?
He should've been suspended much longer.
  Two games is about right.
Shouldn't have been suspended at all.
