It’s a nice number. 25 goals. A total Sabres forward Clarke MacArthur is shooting for this season. Not bad for a guy who as a rookie chipped in 17.
That being said, MacArthur’s name is one of intrigue. Injuries and lackluster play from other forwards elevated him to as high as the second line last year, even though his skill set is that of a lower line performer. MacArthur admitted his was over his head at times last year.
“I had a lot of nerves coming in. It’s tough playing when you’re fighting for a job. You get in there and try to show you can stay up the whole year. I think this year I’m a step ahead of that.”
The left wing’s play was good enough for the Sabres to settle an arbitration case with him back in July.
“It wasn’t really a big thought on my mind. I was really hoping to stay here. I’m glad we got something done, that’s for sure.”
The future is cloudy though. MacArthur signed a one-year extension and will become a restricted free agent next summer. Even with Adam Mair’s hip injury, he’s fighting for regular ice time. That’s why he’s taking this time of year very seriously.
“I think just getting some consistency and getting the systems down. We want to come out of the gates flying, that’s the biggest thing. These preseason games aren’t a joke. We want to win these and get off on the right foot.”
The preseason schedule starts Thursday night. The Capitals come to HSBC Arena.
The Sabres giving Tyler Ennis an entry level contract.Three years for the former first round pick.Ennis was the 26th pick in the 2008 draft.Buffalo used its first pick on Tyler Myers.Ennis scored 43 goals in the Western Hockey League last year.
PRACTICE NOTES…The groups that practiced today did a lot of conditioning work…That group included Derek Roy, Drew Stafford, Patrick Lalime, and Chris Butler…A couple of points of emphasis for Thursday night will be break-outs and players positioning on turnovers.
