The Sabres sent Cody McCormick to Portland of the AHL on Tuesday, leaving the team with 26 players on the roster. Buffalo must trim that number to 23. Head Coach Lindy Ruff says that they'll reach the NHL maximum by 3 p.m. tomorrow but some prospects are making it a difficult task.
"(Tyler) Myers, (Tim) Kennedy, and (Nathan) Gerbe, they've really stepped it up the last few days in camp. They've played well the last couple of games. I've really been impressed with how they've handled certain situations. Those are tough decisions. It's tough because you know they've given everything to gain a spot."
Despite a change in positions, Kennedy is really making a push to be a Sabre in 2009.
"Tim Kennedy, from being a winger turned into a centerman has really played well. From a physical front, from a play-making front, I'm very impressed."
If Nathan Gerbe is to make the team, he'll be counted on for offense. Coach Ruff sees signs of that developing.
"Gerbe is starting to find a little bit of confidence.
Drew Stafford skated on his own on Tuesday. Stafford suffered a concussion, but tested well. Toni Lydman sat out Tuesday's workout with a hand injury.
The Lydman injury, if serious, could play a big hand in whether or not Meyers stays up with the parent club.
"The obvious answer would be 'Yes'. If you don't have (Lydman) that decision would be made easier."
With Stafford out, the top line had a different look. Tim Connolly skated on a wing with Derek Roy and Thomas Vanek. Nathan Gerbe was a fourth addition to the line. Tim Kennedy was between Jason Pominville and Clarke MacArthur. Paul Gaustad centered Jochen Hecht and Mike Grier. Matt Ellis played center with Dan Paille and Pat Kaleta. Adam Mair was practicing fully. Mair was an addition on the fourth line with Ellis.
The defensive pairings began with Chris Butler and Craig Rivet. Andrej Sekera skated with Steve Montador. Nathan Paetsch took Toni Lydman's spot with Henrik Tallinder. The fourth pairing was Mike Weber and Tyler Myers.
so, if kennedy and gerbe get sent down we are "set" with the same bunch of losers that missed the playoffs the last two years THE SABRES ARE A JOKE!

You Suck
you suck.. that's all I have to say. Let's get 2 guys on the roster who weren't here last year and that's gonna make us amazing? I think not. we're fine with what we got.
09/29/2009 3:42PM
RE: they suck
Why don't you go crawl in a hole and die, Troll. It's fans like you that make REAL fans hate seeing the comments. You probably became a fan after the lockout like all the rest of the bandwagoners. Hop off the bandwagon and go join Pittsburgh, I knowyou are sad that Darcy couldn't pull off a Max Afinigenov and a draft pick for Malkin trade. I am sure you proposed such an AWESOME trade on the Whiner line. Idiot.
09/29/2009 4:04PM
We All Suck
We are Sabres fans.
09/29/2009 4:17PM
It does suck
It does suck being a sabres and bills fan. I wish my parents would have had a little foresight and moved out of western NY so i didn't have to deal with this...lol

Buffalo's Got The Spirit, Talkin' Doom and Gloom
Nothing but "doomers and gloomers" on WGR550's website. Those aren't the Buffalo fans I know. If the Bills sign Gruden and the Sabres make the playoffs, all of you are going to say "I knew it all along", right? And if it doesn't happen, you'll be one step closer to doing something idiotic like vandalizing the property of one of our players. C'mon, Buffalo, whatever happened to "Talkin' Proud"? Yes, it could be said that the current coaches and management of our football and hockey teams made that phrase extinct...but that doesn't mean you should plan the funeral before the body dies...
09/29/2009 4:22PM
You know what really Sucks?
Not watching the Sabres!!! Wake up guys. It is better than watching stinkin' reality shows and crap designed for women. I can't wait for the Sabres to start. We added some toughness and leadership to the team. I would have wished for more, but old Tom is keeping things cheap, I mean inexpensive. But I am definitely salivating at watching them. Besides, everyone has an opinion whether they have been on board since the drafting of Perrault or after the lock-out. So lighten up and hope that the small tweaks pay-off, and we do well in trades (not likely given his track record, but you have to hope...)

Buffalo's Got The Spirit, Talkin'...Doom and Gloom?
I have never heard so much doom and gloom around Buffalo sports in a long time (since the HORRIBLE play of both teams in the mid 80's). Seriously, people, there have been times where Buffalo teams have been worse off than we are right now. Mediocrity issometimes more frustrating than outright awfulness but that does not mean you have to plan the funeral before the body dies. Especially with this year's Sabres. Lindy Ruff is no Dick Jauron, after all.
09/29/2009 5:05PM
Playoffs
Lindy knows
Buffalo will be back in the playoffs. They will compete in the postseason. Good bunch of guys with a great coach and a great goalie
09/29/2009 5:08PM
Lindy Knows
They will make the playoffs. Good team, great coach, great goalie.
It shouldn't surprise anyone
09/29/2009 5:45PM
Go B----uh Go SABRES
Well atleast one team will be worth watching this year in Buffalo. The sabres aren't world beaters, but they will be fun to watch and should make the playoffs. Not all 30 teams can be ridiculously awesome, the sabres are a middling franchise and I'm okay with that. I think it's a real possibility that the sabres could be a pleasant surprise this year (a la our first final four run a couple of years ago) -- something you can't say about the Bills, ever.
09/29/2009 8:59PM
DON'T BE PESSIMISTIC
don't get down on this team bfore the puck drops. The one thing we can say is they got much tougher. If u like toughness, then i think we'll all b in 4 a nice surprise this year.I predict the sabres go into the playoffs in 7th.
09/29/2009 10:10PM
playoffs are a no-brainer
there's notenough talent in the East to stop them. all these kids are a year older and Mike Grier will be kicking some ass in the locker room when they need it. he won't care who he pisses off, guys will really be accountable. Ryan will help him.
09/29/2009 11:12PM
No Time For You
The real fans of the Buffalo Sabres do not have time for people like this. If you can not support the team then go be a fan of someone else. I think you actually love the Sabres or you would not get so upset.
09/29/2009 11:23PM
Could be worse
We could be flyer fans. Good money after bad--year after year after year after year.....
09/29/2009 11:35PM
yes
I would put money on them making a run this year. I can see them at 5 or 6 at the end of the season.
09/30/2009 1:15AM
the Sabres
The Sabres will make the playoffs this year. We have a good core who grew together and if there are no injuries to Miller, we'll be pretty much set.
09/30/2009 8:09AM
Transitional year...perhaps?
Despite the whining and doomsaying on one side and Catholic Nun knuckle rapping responding support on the other....it might be suggested that both sides have a point. For the first group there is an understandable frustration with what appears to be the same group as last taking the ice. Certainly Montador was great pickup - but only as a piece of the puzzle - while Grier will help in the locker room. Who wouldn't have loved to see a new top line star in Buffalo? On the other hand "playoffs are a no-brainer" makes a very valid point. Darcy and Lindy are betting that maturity and an injection of fire (Montador) together with an in your face kinda guy (Grier...also look for Rivet to step up more and hurt some feelings)might be the ticket to the playoffs. Remember, Lydman and Tallinder are in the last year of their contracts..they will be playing for an NHL future (though I expect we will see the "Max" treatment be in effect for both - that is, here is your last pay check...bye bye. All in all, the new kids are set for next year...Myers for sure, and perhaps Kassian. Just my thoughts. I look for a playoff spot...though no home advantage in the first round.
09/30/2009 8:15AM
doom and gloom people
To all these people on here "bashing" the doom and gloom people. what would you like? To continue to be positive about 2 losing organizations run by idiots? Look if you want to waste 3k to go watch Sabre games so be it, people are entitled to their opinions. BTW do you listen to the station or read the paper? What is positive about what you hear? The hosts are as negative as the posters. It's what we do and who we are petty whiners who think the world owes us something. Start winning and you won't have to hear this stuff.
09/30/2009 8:18AM
re: transitional
this post is too intelligent for this please leave, ok just kidding. anyway, transitional? i say rebuilding. The problem is we lack true blue chip talent. I'd rather be the Islanders, LA, Tampa or St Louis who are bad but have true Blue chip talents where you know they will be good. We have marginal prospects like Gerbe mixed with has beens in Rivet and Grier, so where are we going? Just go all young and that is that
09/30/2009 9:12AM
re:re: transitional"Blue chips"
The Islanders? Really? You would rather be the Islanders? Or Tampa? It's nice when you have a really great line.... but then what about the other 40 minutes. The idea of "Blue Chips" on your team has gotten mangled. It sounds like you want "Names" on the team. say what you want.... but this team has more than enough talent to get into the playoffs and there's no huge drop off between the first two lines. You have solid players throughout.
So keep the "blue chippers" and their franchise destroying salaries... I'll take solid lines and goal tending.
09/30/2009 9:12AM
Transitional
I would just love to see a couple new names on the roster rather than hoping one of the old names will finally step up and do what they were supposed to. Lets give a few new guys a chance, it may pay off!
09/30/2009 9:14AM
Filling The arena
Sure that di practically nothing to compete with those moves of divisional rivals but that is not the Sabres MO. While those foolish fans are led to believe that Gallisano and Quinn actually care about winning the real objective is doing just fine. This nut is all about Quinn's project to keep that arena and the debt load in fine shape in order to protect is own special interests. This is a real estate investment not a true professional sports product.
09/30/2009 9:16AM
not really
Ok i know we dont ahve a huge goal scoreer or a top notch defensemen but the sabres have been spendign close to the cap.....remeber vanek has what like 7 mil a year thank u montreal (at least canada is good for something) and buffalo had to sign him he was one of our own prospects that we have developed. Plus you have a great goalie when he is not INJURIED! that also got a lot of money. so for all you doom n gloom if you remeber correclty alot of big name sabers missed alot of games w/ injuries. (vanek rivet, miller) and for thiose sayon Tom Galisano is cheap not really considering he has been close to the cap the last 2 years. Lets see what happens these players have matured and hopefully some of the younger players will make the roster and make a significant contribution. I for one am excited!!!!!
09/30/2009 10:37AM
cup run
The sabres will finally win the cup this year, thanks to Ryan miller. Then you fools will be back on the bandwagon.
09/30/2009 10:38AM
Re: Filling The Arena
Great stat to watch for this season. How many 18,690's will there be this season?
09/30/2009 12:08PM
Relax
Dont worry Sabre fans ...It might not seem like it at times, bu t i believe Lindy and Regier know what they are doing ...so just relax our time is coming....i hope....lol
09/30/2009 12:16PM
Lord Stanley here we come
Step aside please cause the Sabres are charging fast all the way to the finals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
09/30/2009 5:51PM
Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres will make the playoffs this year. They got tougher in the off season and as long as Miller stays healthy then they should get in. Lalime has to step up and win games when called upon. Vanek will have to lead by example and fill the net.
09/30/2009 7:25PM
Sabres
Lets Go Buffalo
09/30/2009 9:41PM
feel sorry for season ticket holders
I can`t imagine,yr after yr having to cough up thousands and thousands of dollars,to watch the talent that plays in Hsbc arena.Lets face it,the fans have no say in who plays for us,its management who makes those decesions, and we the fans pay money to support their decesions. If darcy said lets bring back say Bob Corkum, the season ticket holders would rejoice and pay more money to see a hasbeen. The only way to get the point across to upper management,is to stop buying tickets to see this crap on the ice.You folks want to see good hard fought hockey, with players giving it their all?check out a niagara university hockey game and compare the effort to what is being played professionaly, not to mention the ticket prices are 75% cheaper. sO STOP FILLING THE ARENA!!!!
10/01/2009 11:26AM
feel sorry?
its called dedication to your home team bro. Most if not all people from buffalo that are sabres fans are die hard, how many times have you heard that buffalo has the best, most intense, die hard fans for there teams? too many. you cant compare a collegehockey team to a professional level, especially when they are right down the road from one another.
10/01/2009 12:35PM
RE Feel Sorry
I can understand your point about dedication, and yes we do have a loyal fan base here,im not complaining about that, but thats my point!!!!.Great fan base always has since i was old enough to follow hockey. Why cant management bring in some kind of excitement?Do you remember the Hasek days?We had a all world goalie who stood on his head yr after yr,and the team did nothing to bring in a goal scorer, someone who was proven to put the puck in the net. Just one player, instead,we keep on hopeing that our farm system gets better every yr,and it doesn`t.I guarentee,if the team would of made a few bold moves back then,we would of won a stanley cup. That is why,and i know one of our free agents that we lost a few yrs ago, that is why he left, beceause he saw that management wasn`t going to go the extra mile and put this team over the top.I know the guy personally, been friends with him for yrs,and thats what he told me.So do i sound like a mad as hell fan?Yes i do,just tired of the same old story yr after yr.Look at the guys they signed this yr,3rd line players that are slowing down. You cant tell me,that as a season ticket holder, you watch your hard earned dollar go right into sabres managements pocket, and look at the product thats out there, and have to wonder.
10/03/2009 3:04PM
Re re sorry
i see your side also, management has slacked far below par. i think that dependent on how well we do this year determines what happens with management. If we dont make the playoffs for the third straight year, then i think its safe to say bye bye to lindy and darcy as a duo.
