(WGR 550) -- The first quarterback to win a game in the history of the United Football League is...
J.P. Losman.
The curiousity that is the UFL debuted Thursday night on Versus, with one-time Bills starter Losman the leader of the Las Vegas Locomotives' 30-17 win over the California Redwoods in front of a small crowd in Nevada.
Losman was 21-of-31 for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Former Cincinnati Bengal and Lindenwood University product DeDe Dorsey also scored twice for the "Locos." The announced attendance was just over 14,000, though the Las Vegas Review-Journal said the crowd was closer to 5,000.
Bills fans will find the way Losman's first drive unfolded -- with typical infuriating inconsistency -- quite familiar. Losman was almost sacked on his first pass attempt, then completed a 15-yard pass before having to use a time-out when he found himself in danger of a delay of game penalty. Later in the drive, he completed a 25-yard -- approximately, the UFL apparently doesn't do "box scores" -- pass before his team fumbled on a 3rd-and-goal.
Don't believe me? Here's The Globe and Mail's running game log, courtesy of Dave Naylor:
"9:35 – J.P. Losman just threw a pass over the middle that nearly got his receiver killed. “He’s got to put it in his chest and instead he looped it,” says Flutie. I think we just found out part of the reason why J.P. was not the most popular player on the Bills.
9:36 -- Losman is now 7 of 8 passing and I can only wonder if Buffalo GM Russ Brandon is watching.
9:37 -- Losman takes an eight-yard sack. Doug Flutie says he blew it and should have throw the ball away. Russ Brandon is feeling a little better now."
