Amherst, NY (WGR 550) -- Last February Nashville came into Buffalo and skated out with a 2-0 victory. Lindy Ruff thought the game had no flow and just hated coaching it, "I've already gone back to the game we played them last year and the notes on the paper was it was the most boring game I've ever been involved with. It was a game that was 0-0 until the end, there was no chances, they tight gapped us, we tight gapped them, their defense are mobile, they're a good defense and we have to get away from that mold where we put the puck in the place where we can go get it." When I asked Ruff if he expects the same type of game against them he said, "I hope not, they did a great job against us, they're almost a mirror image of how we're playin' where it's tight gap and puck pressure and always got two men going. We see teams like Montreal that only have one man going where we're able to pick our way in and get going and get some opportunities. Nashville's different, you make a D to D pass, they're jumping the pass, you make a pass to your winger, the D are jumping that pass so there's not a lot of time and there's not a lot of ice so if they're trying to tight gap us, we need to get some pucks in behind them."
Thomas Vanek has been almost invisible the first two games, but he did come through when he had to last night with the game winning goal. Lindy Ruff said, "Some of the onus lies on Thomas, I saw some situations in the game where I thought the second man needs to drive and I thought he waited in the open areas where if he would've went, he would've had the opportunity for a second man option, just wee little things that you probably wouldn't pick up watching the game. The big thing is, Thomas scored the big goal for us, if it's only getting it to him once or twice and he gets one of them, that's fine by me."
Ruff said that Ryan Miller will start his third straight game.
Tim Connolly was back at center between Clarke MacArthur and Jason Pominville. Connolly said, "I've always been more comfortable at center, I've played it my whole life, but in the past we've had some success with that line on the wing. I'm sure throughout the season if we don't generate offense we're going to mix it up a bit and try to get more things going."
Tim Kennedy centered Mike Grier and Jochen Hecht, Drew Stafford moved to wing with Derek Roy and Vanek. Paul Gaustad was between Matt Ellis and Pat Kaleta.
