WGR 550 has learned that the Sabres have traded forward Dan Paille to the Boston Bruins in exchange for a 3rd round draft choice and a conditional pick. The conditional pick could become a 4th rounder depending on Paille production with the Bruins.
Paille was a first round draft choice of the Sabres (20th overall) in 2002. After time split with the minors and the Sabres in 2005-06 and 2006-07, Paille played the past two full seasons with Buffalo. He scored 12 goals to go with 15 assists last year. Paille's career highs in goals and assists came in the 2007-08 season when he registered 19 goals and 16 assists.
Paille was a healthy scratch for the beginning of this season, unable to crack the line-up with rookie Tim Kennedy making the squad. Captain Craig Rivet joined Nick Mendola and Dennis Williams following the move, telling the guys "it's a sad day for the Sabres because Paille's a great guy and an incredible hockey player that will be missed by the team."
Rivet said he received a call from General Manager Darcy Regier informing him of the move and then told the rest of the team. The blue liner said several players stopped by Paille's room to wish him luck before he left for the airport to join the Bruins. Rivet added that the trade is "a great new opportunity" for the former first round pick.
The Bruins web site claims this is the first trade ever between the two teams which is not true. On June 11, 1976 Buffalo traded the rights to Peter McNab to Boston for the rights to Andre Savard.
he wasn't very good for us. A 3rd and a possible fourth are more than I expected.
10/20/2009 6:18PM
wow darcy
he made a smart move
10/20/2009 6:20PM
hey darcy
this is not the nhl trade deadline,,its the nfl trade deadline
10/20/2009 6:27PM
Good Luck Buddy
Thanks for the effort
10/20/2009 6:30PM
paille
wasnt utilized correctly here. good for him
10/20/2009 6:30PM
Paille..
Too bad Paille couldn't play consitant enough to play in BUffalo. If he thinks it was hard to stay in the line up under Ruff, wait till he has to deal with Claude Julien. Does this mean we fill the roster spot with a Pirate??
10/20/2009 6:32PM
wow
I normally don't complain but i don't think this is a good trade at all. 3rd 4th round picks probably won't play for us another 2 years after that. Paille was a good player too.
10/20/2009 6:33PM
wow
wow must have been a money move, the sabres are as cheap as the bills, watch this guy burn us 7 times a season..unreal
10/20/2009 6:33PM
Good Trade
Daniel Paille was traded today because he hasnt played in a single game this year. That is six games and wouldve been seven tomorrow night. The fact is Tim Kennedy is an improvement over Daniel Paille. Even thought Timmy has yet to score, he gives you all hes got every single night, something Paille didnt do. 3 cheers to a 3rd pick and a see yeah for Daniel Paille
10/20/2009 6:35PM
Why not throw in Paestch ?
Tim Kennedy has been that impressive ???
10/20/2009 6:37PM
otown
Paille deserves to be playing. Just to many forwards on this team. Worth a 3rd rounder
10/20/2009 6:56PM
Re: Good Trade
hes actually played in 2 games and has registered an assist
10/20/2009 7:01PM
Wow
3rd rounder? Shocked!
10/20/2009 7:01PM
Money, Money, Money
This comes down to one thing....money! I like it, but we best make a good move come trade deadline and a push in the playoffs!
10/20/2009 7:08PM
Good luck Danny
There were certainly more downs than ups in Paille's career here, but he is a decent player that never seemed to complain about being sat the first part of the season. Good luck in Boston and try not to score too many when the Sabres are at the other end.
10/20/2009 7:14PM
re: good trade
correction paille played one game. i still dont think he should of gotten traded. he was a good player and did good for buffalo. paestch would have beena better choice for a trade.
10/20/2009 7:17PM
paille
This also means that the sabres are freeing up cap space Maybe their trying to bring back Miro Satan. (chuckles)
10/20/2009 7:20PM
Re: Wow
Haha I love the guys who say the sabres are cheap when the past few years they have been right up against the cap. Do some research before you make dumb comments just makes you look like an idiot. Paille is making over a million dollars why would you keep a guy on your team like that who is only going to play if there is an injury. We always complain that Darcy waits to long to trade his players example Max so I applaud him for doing this. This is def un darcy like.
10/20/2009 7:21PM
Like it, but....
...I wish he went somewhere where we could wish him luck.
10/20/2009 7:24PM
paille trade
good move for everyone, sabres have a lot of young talent, paille wasnt playing up to his potential, i like him, wish he played tougher, maybe a fresh start for him will be good, we still have gerbe, macari and a list of others that can come up, wouldnt mind seeing mair, gone as well, like the effort ellis has put it...good luck Danny i think it will be best for him
10/20/2009 7:51PM
wow
How can anyone say its a money move when the Sabres are near the cap limit.....Im so tired of hearing the cheap comments when they actually spend money. Paille was good when he wanted to be....marginal most times and absent at others...
10/20/2009 8:04PM
kennedy?
At first, I thought that Kennedy would do fine; liked his energy. Last couple of games, I'm not so sure. Seems to be a little like a young Affinaginov?
10/20/2009 8:07PM
Kennedy?
Like his energy early on, but looks more like a younger Max to me.
10/20/2009 8:09PM
Fire Regeir
this guy was a true blue chip prospect and Darcy gave him away for nothing. This guy goes on to score 40 Goals easy, more incompetance by managment. Fire Regeir & Quinn!!!!
10/20/2009 8:40PM
Better Then Lost on Waivers
I think this is a smart move. We had too many forwards, and we could have tried to send him down and lost him to waivers with nothing in return!
10/20/2009 8:55PM
ok but...
nobody in any other divisions or conference ever want any of our players?
10/20/2009 8:59PM
I Like it.
We always sit here and complain that we let players walk, getting nothing in return for them. We always sit here and complain that the sabres are married to their draft picks and regularly escalate their committment regardless of performance. This is neither. Good for them - Paille is a dime a dozen, as you can see wtih Kennedy taking over for him without issue. Glad to get something for Paille and own up to a bad first round pick.
10/20/2009 9:03PM
Good
Got something for someone who wasn't playing and would have lost anyways at the end of the year.
10/20/2009 9:14PM
money
The bottom line is he makes too much to be a scratch every game. This was a good trade. I hope he developes in Boston, just not against us.
10/20/2009 9:44PM
trade deadline
I like that getting the NFL and NHL trade deadlines mixed up. Somebody should have told Russ Brandon it was today as well, shoulda got rid of marshawn, TO and one of our over rated D-Ends. Maybe even John McCargo AGAIN.
10/20/2009 10:13PM
atrosity
you gave away a top prospect for a bag of pucks d/t a cheap owner. This is my last year as a season ticket owner
10/20/2009 10:22PM
Good move
I think this was a good trade for all involved. Danny was caught in a numbers game here as we have some promising younger players that need the opportunity to play more often, and gems can be found beyond the first two rounds of the draft, giving us the chance to keep a healthy supply of prospects available in juniors, college, overseas, and the AHL. Good luck to Danny, but not the Bruins. Go Sabres!
10/20/2009 10:41PM
Round 2:
paestch
10/20/2009 11:03PM
Good But....
Good that we got some picks for a guy who wasn't going to play much But you never make a trade inside the division especially with a player that has potential...so I have to give this trade a thumbs down.
10/20/2009 11:18PM
Local Kid
Sad to see a local kid get traded away. Welland is 15 minutes from the Peace Bridge. Wonder if there would be a bigger uproar if it had been Kaleta.
10/20/2009 11:47PM
Hmmmm....
I am shocked Darcy! Now send Kennedy back to Portland and bring up McCormick.
Kennedy needs to put on some muscle.
He is out of place on that 3rd line.
Good luck Danny Boy. I wish you the best 76 games a year and any playoff games not against Buffalo.
10/21/2009 12:04AM
good luck
best of luck in your career. #s game here was tough.
10/21/2009 12:10AM
Paestch
Paestch sucks that's why he's not in
10/21/2009 1:18AM
Sabres Are Cheap?
Sabres have the 12th highest cap hit in the league. I wouldn't call that cheap at all.
10/21/2009 1:21AM
Benefit for him?
Maybe he wanted more playing time so he asked for a trade?
10/21/2009 7:11AM
myers
this is a move they made so they can keep myers up. plain and simple. that, and paille was horribly inconsistent.
10/21/2009 8:17AM
pathetic fans
Some of the comments on here are terrible. have any of you clowns ever watched a hockey game. Paille was a dime a dozen. The problem in years past is we have to many Paille's.glad to see him gone. let Boston deal with an average player who shows upwhen he wants to!
10/21/2009 8:26AM
McCormick??
I just saw Portland play Manchester. McCormick is too slow. Mancari and Gerbe nearly inviisible.
10/21/2009 8:29AM
GOODBYE DANNY
well its about time!! im surprised we got a 3rd rounder for him when hes only worth a bag of pucks n maybe skate lace or 2. congrats darcy, way to get rid of some dead weight around here. as for all u fans who think danny will ever score 30 let alone 40, get real! this guy is a career 4th liner and im glad boston has to deal with him now. why dont u guys tune in and watch a game before you come on here woth your pathetic comments! good salary dump. lets go buffalo!!!
10/21/2009 8:50AM
Fire Regeir!
Paille for a bag of pucks. A typical Regeir move getting nothing. What a joke!
10/21/2009 8:50AM
Kennedy = Affinogenov? What?
When did you ever see Max battle along the boards and face wash a guy out in front of his own goaltender?
10/21/2009 8:53AM
Re: Round 2
Sekera and Paetch in a package deal.
10/21/2009 9:04AM
Way to go Lindy and company
Good job Lindy not coaching up another young guy. Ellis over a former #1 pick--please. Is Bob Corker far away ??!!
10/21/2009 9:04AM
Money? Really? Get over it!
This had nothing to do with money, this had to do with Myers. The Sabres had to make a move to keep him here. Once Sekera comes back from IR we would be forced into a move. Good move by Darcy to get something instead of giving something away through waivers.
10/21/2009 9:20AM
just wait!
what are all you sabre butt wipes going to do when they send myers down?.. that will be another money move.. its coming pom pom waver's!
10/21/2009 9:32AM
GREAT Trade
A 3rd & a 4th for a guy that would be a healthy scratch most nights? Seems like a steal to me. Paille had his chances to move up the pecking order and he did not come through. He is not good enough to be in the Top 6 and does not play a 3rd/4th line style, either - GREAT trade.
10/21/2009 9:33AM
Myers...
Eh em, 7 games in only 2 more that Myers can play. I foresee this as making room for Tyler Myers and with Mair healthy and back, room for him. That is all this is...
10/21/2009 9:33AM
Division?
Couldn't we have at least trade him out of our division? Paille was a decent enough player who could actually help the Bruins be more competitive this year. I am not saying he will be the next Gretzky on the Bruins but he can make them stronger in the right areas. That being said that could end up tightening up the division in terms of wins and points. I like the move just not within our division.
10/21/2009 9:37AM
GREAT Trade
Way to go Darcy! A 3rd & a 4th for a 4th liner/scratch? What a steal! Paille had his chances to move up the pecking order and did not come through. In years past, he would have rotted on the 4th line while younger guys skated in the AHL. It's great to see a Buffalo team realize that things have not worked over the past couple of years and CHANGE their philosophy a bit. What a concept!
10/21/2009 10:32AM
paille
the guy has a lot of potential, when he has played he hasn't done a bad job, boston will be lucky to have him.
10/21/2009 10:50AM
sets the tone...
i think it sets a good tone for the team. there are two choices, 100% for 60min or pack your bags. hopefully the 'core' players see this as well. no more coddling the players in the locker room.
10/21/2009 10:50AM
Good Luck to Danny!!
It looks like Darcy just stood up and did the right thing. Danny wasn't able to crack the line up for regular playing time. Other players are pushing their way in and with still others getting healthy, a move was necessitated. If Danny hadn't been traded, someone would have needed to be place on waivers; then the Sabres would have been left empty handed. This was the Sabres get some picks and Danny gets another chance to stay with an NHL roster.
10/21/2009 11:02AM
Another Trade coming...
This trade was made to free up cap space (yes the Sabres were/are close to the cap) to trade Drew Stafford for Tom Gilbert of the Edmonton Oilers. Stafford's cap hit is 1.9M and Gilbet's is 4M so they needed to free up space by trading away Paille. Once they make this trade, they will demote/buy out Tallinder. You heard it hear first folks! Defenceman Tom Gilbert (last year's stats:5-40-45) will be quarterbacking our PP by next week! Go Sabres! -Kevin
10/21/2009 11:20AM
NEEDED TO BE DONE
Too many left wingers on the team and a couple more young guys that will eventually beat him out too. Darcy let him move on. He did him a favor rather than making him sit in the press box every night.
10/21/2009 11:32AM
RE: Fire Regeir
I agree with firing Regeir - if he is truly the one making decisions. I have never been a fan of Quinn. With Buffalo’s system, Danny would never score 40, so may as well let him go. He needed to show more effort/passion/consistency and be a better two-way player.
10/21/2009 11:50AM
Nice
Good move. Paille was at best the 13th best forward on this team and would have been a restricted free agent after this season. Now we've got at least one relatively high draft pick with which to wheel and deal come draft time. Very nice.
10/21/2009 12:04PM
Making cap room for Dixon Ward.
Word is he'll be playing in a couple weeks. Put him on a line with Connolly and Vanek!
10/21/2009 12:12PM
Good Luck Danny
Glad to see Danny has a chance to go to Boston and get into their lineup. I wish him the best! And to those of you thinking Darcy screwed up by only getting a 3rd rounder and a conditional 4th rounder are completely off your rocker. Who knows who could be in those positions and really, what do you think he could have gotten? An AHL journeyman? A decent prospect? This works because they needed the cap space.
10/21/2009 1:39PM
that's it for me
this team is now gutted, i'm giving up my season tix
10/21/2009 2:29PM
Paille will haunt them
Dan Paille never really got a chance to fit into the sabres system. This guy scored 19 goals with playing on the 3/4th line with no power play time. I hope Boston uses him to his potential and if they do it will certainly come back on haunt the divisional rival Sabres.
10/21/2009 2:40PM
Do you people know anything?
It is amazing that no matter what the Sabres do some people are never happy. They don't make trades fire Regier, they make a trade fire Regier he didn't get enough back. They dont sign players fire Regier, they do sign players fire Regier they signed the wrong players for too much money. Half the people on here just like to complain and know nothing about hockey. I say good give up your season tickets then I wont have to listen to your dumb comments at the games either.
10/21/2009 3:17PM
need money
should part with overpriced players like tallinder or paetsch who never plays
10/21/2009 3:30PM
RE: do you people.
tell me sir, for your "faith" in Regeir and the money you wasted on season tickets, what exactly do you have to show for it? any Stanley Cups? Are they even near being a contender for one? i can use 3k a year to do alot of more worthwhile things like vacation in Maui. go there and tell me which is the better use of the money. Galisano can care a less about any one of you, wake up, he's stealing your money and your more than happy to make him rich.
10/21/2009 5:33PM
Harold Snepsts
This clears the way to bring Snepsts back from retirement. Darcy has been trying to do this for years.
10/21/2009 6:46PM
good go to maui
Why are you even commenting on here if you hate the team, Golisano, and call it a waste of money to go to games. I enjoy the sport of hockey and like watching the Sabres play. For good or bad I get enjoyment out of the game and the expierence.
10/22/2009 11:15AM
Team USA
Miller will be our goaltender in the Olymipics and will lead us to GOLD in Vancouver! It will be fun to win the gold on Canadian soil!
