The Classic Bills are 4-1 after last week's exciting 26-24 win over the 1980 Chargers. This week, we look back at their 1998 matchup with Jacksonville.
The '98 Bills were on the Classic schedule one other time, for their 34-33 loss to the Rams. That loss dropped the '98 Bills to 0-3, and it appeared that the Bills were on their way to back-to-back non-playoff seasons for the first time since 1986-87. But that wasn't the case. The Bills got in the win column with an upset win over San Francisco, then blew out Indianapolis before returning home for this game with the Jaguars.
Their wins to get to 2-3 were nice, but I remember this Jacksonville game as a real litmus test for the Bills. If they were really to be taken seriously, they'd beat Jacksonville. I remember thinking that they wouldn't win this game. I wasn't a big believer in the '98 Bills until about mid-season.
The Bills came from behind to win it on Doug Flutie's fourth-and-goal scramble, 17-16. It may be the definitive "Flutie Magic" game. The Bills did make the playoffs that year, and they remain the last NFL team to do so after starting 0-3.
