The "Classic" Bills are 5-1 after a thrilling 26-24 win in San Diego last week against the 1980 Chargers. Make that 6-1 after one of my favorite Bills wins ever, a 37-14 Monday Night Football triumph over the Jets, October 17, 1988.
I loved this game. The Bills started 4-0 but showed some weakness in their ensuing two games, a bad loss in Chicago and a comeback win over lowly Indianapolis, a game they once trailed 20-0. So they took a 5-1 record into the Meadowlands for a matchup with the Jets.
The Bills hadn't been on Monday Night Football in five years. And to me, a 16-year-old fan, the Bills making it to prime time meant a great deal. It was a sign of credibility that they'd get a MNF game; nowadays that's somewhat true but with there being two prime-time games a week, it's less impressive if you get picked to play at night. This Jets game was a chance for the Bills to prove they deserved to be there, and to be thought of as a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
They passed the test easily, blowing out the Jets.
I think of this game as the "Flip Johnson Game". Johnson, an obscure backup receiver for the Bills, caught a tipped pass and sped 66 yards to a touchdown and a 17-0 Bills lead. The score was 31-7 at halftime. (High marks if you knew who the Jets' leading receiver in this game was. Remember K.D. Dunn? I don't.)
