Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) -- It seemed like every time the Sabres played the Flyers last season it was a good, close game for two periods and then a few things would go wrong for Buffalo and the Flyers would pull away and win. Martin Biron beat them all four times last season but he is now an Islander. The last time Buffalo saw a lot of Ray Emery, he lead Ottawa past the Sabres in the playoffs. Philly's new goalie is 11-7-3 with a 2.42 goals against and .916 save percentage. Ryan Miller still leads the NHL with a .941 save percentage. His 1.69 goals against is second. As far as getting by Philadelphia this year, Lindy Ruff said, "I don't think the Flyers are ever going to be out of a game. They can be dangerous enough they can be in most games even if they get down a couple goals, one game we had a fair lead and gave that up too."
In the four games last year, captain Mike Richards had four goals and six assists. Jeff Carter had five goals while Kimmo Timonen added seven assists. Fast forwarding to this season, Richards has eight goals and seven assists in 12 games. He has five points in his last three. With Daniel Briere and Simon Gagne out with injuries, David Laliberte was called up and in just two games he has two goals and an assist. Carter has four points in two games, James Van Riemsdyk has a goal and five assists in three games. He leads NHL rookie scorers, but the hottest Flyer has been Scott Hartnell with three goals and four assists in three games.
Philadelphia is just .500 in its last four games, but have won two in a row against Carolina and Tampa Bay.
The NHL's best power play has been 5-of-13 lately. Philadelphia also has good penalty killing as it stands 4th. Buffalo is now up to 15th on the PK and 17th on the power play. The Sabres have scored with the extra man in three of the last four games and seven of the last nine. You might be surprised to know that the Sabres have power play goals in all but three of their games this season.
The Sabres are 9-2-1 this season, but if you go back to last year Buffalo is 16-4-2.
