Round One Goes To The Flyers 5-2

Buffalo, NY (WGR550)  -- Rookie defenseman James van Riemsdyk netted the game winner as the Philadelphia Flyers rolled over the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 Friday night at HSBC Arena.

Daniel Carcillo's first goal of the season has given the Flyers a 1-0 lead over the Sabres after one period.  Carcillo deflected a shot out of mid-air to get the puck past Ryan Miller.  Braydon Coburn took the shot from the point, and was credited with an assist, along with Ian Laperriere.

Philly narrowly outshot Buffalo in the opening period 11 shots to 9.  Neither team converted on the power play as well.  Buffalo was 0-for-2 on the man advantage, while the Flyers were 0-for-1.  Tim Kennedy was called for a cross checking minor for the only Buffalo penalty of the first.

A screen shot by Chris Pronger beat Miller less than a minute into the second period to give Philadelphia a 2-0 lead over the Sabres.  Pronger scored after a pass back to the point by Blair Betts.  Betts and Laperriere received the assists on the even strength goal.  Derek Roy cut the Sabres' deficit in half with a power play goal four minutes later.  With a four-on-three power play on going Roy slid a shot past Flyers' netminder Ray Emery to make the score 2-1 Philly.  Jason Pominville and Tim Connolly assisted on the special teams score.

van Riemsdyk has given the Flyers another two-goal lead with his third goal of the season.  The rookie tried sliding a pass across the front of the net, but the puck deflected off of Miller to re-up the Philly lead to 3-1.  Kimmo Timonen was credited with the lone assist on the goal.

Darroll Powe extended the Flyers lead to 4-1 two and a half minutes into the third period.  Powe's even strength goal was unassisted.  Tyler Myers beat Ray Emery on the power play to cut the Buffalo deficit to 4-2 in the third.  Myers unassisted goal came a little more than ten minutes into the final stanza.  Roy added an assist for his second point of the night.  Captain Craig Rivet also received a helper on the power play goal.

Carcillo scored his second goal of the game with an empty net score with less than a minute to go in the game to seal the victory 5-2 for Philly.

Emery made 28 saves for the victory, while Miller stopped 32 of Philadelphia's 36 shots on goal in the loss.  The Sabres were 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Flyers went 0-for-4 on the man advantage.

The Sabres head to Boston right away to take on the Bruins Saturday night at 7 o'clock.  You can catch all of the action on WGR Sports Radio 550 and wgr550.com, starting with the pregame coverage.  Join Brian Koziol 6 p.m. as he leads you right up to the puck drop.

AHH!
Now THAT'S the cheap, mediocre team that I know! We need another goal scorer if we're gonna make the playoffs. Still early, I know, but if we can't beat Emery, that's a problem.

Suck Agains the Flyers
Why Are the Sabres always a bunch of pathetic losers when they play the Flyers?

The Pretenders
This team is not for real.. they are nothing but pretenders. When they play the good teams they get crushed.

Vanek
Why does vanek get a free pass for his lack of physical play. He certainly gets paid like a star, is it too much to expect him to perform like one as well? If the argument is that he's a goal scorer and therefore doesn't need to play a physical game I would say that those days are past and the mike Richards and OVs of the game have redefined the our expectations of a goal scorer; a top line goal scorer can and should be both a goal producer and a physical player. It's time that we held Vanek to a higher standard.

Where are the Sabre and Miller lovers now?
Come on guys where are you? Oh let me guess every goal against miller he didnt' see right? It's called "we played a real team and weren't good enough"!! Get used to it! REALITY TIME! So much for that Vezina because Mr Softeecan't play the islanders every night!
11/07/2009 9:06AM
figures the nay sayers are out
We lose to the Flyers and people immediately crawl out of the woodwork and say we can't beat an elite team but they were nowhere to be seen when we mauled Detroit and New Jersey last month. I can't believe the amount of negativity for a teamthat's 9-3-1. The first goal deflects off of Myers and Philly gets a lucky tip. Miller blows the third goal. Hey, it happens. So what? Why not wait a couple of more weeks before you all throw in the towel on the season?
11/07/2009 9:44AM
reality!
now that the sabres have to play a team that matters, they do the usual.. november, annual swoon is upon us!
11/07/2009 9:50AM
Contradict yourself much?
"Neither team converted on the power play as well" "Derek Roy cut the Sabres' deficit in half with a power play goal four minutes later"
11/07/2009 10:15AM
wow
you guys are crazy. i mean come on. its one game jesus
11/07/2009 10:57AM
Holy cow, we lost! Fire everybody!
Even the best teams lose games ugly sometimes and go through rough stretches. We're still looking very good in the standings. Losing to the Flyers is never enjoyable, but it's a little early to be panicking. Miller has been a stud all year until this past week, a few bad games and he's having a lousy season all of a sudden?

JVR
Didn't anyone catch that in the beginning of the write-up? He is a FORWARD. Nice one.

Reverting Back to Old Form
As soon as the Sabres face some adversity they revert back to old form. Tim Connoly starts making no look passes that result in the turnovers. The forwards on the top two lines refuse to dump the puck in and turn it over the opposing team's blue line. It takes grit to win in the playoffs and the Sabres lack that with certain players and they mainly reside on the top two lines.

One loss, don't get your panties in a bunch
i was feeling the same way about this game too, but i highly doubt that this game puts us in 10th place for the 3rd year in a row. Calm down band wagon fans.

LOOK AT THIS STAT
After the game tonight against Boston, the Sabres have played 14 games on the sean and have 19 points. Last year after 14 games, the Sabres had 19 points. And we all know what happened last year....NO PLAYOFFS again! So I'm sure all you Sabre die hards who were predicting a CUP last year are back doing the same. The fact remains that the Sabres stink and they will miss the playoffs for the 3rd straight year and for the 7th time out of the past 9 years!
