Buffalo, NY (WGR550) -- Rookie defenseman James van Riemsdyk netted the game winner as the Philadelphia Flyers rolled over the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 Friday night at HSBC Arena.
Daniel Carcillo's first goal of the season has given the Flyers a 1-0 lead over the Sabres after one period. Carcillo deflected a shot out of mid-air to get the puck past Ryan Miller. Braydon Coburn took the shot from the point, and was credited with an assist, along with Ian Laperriere.
Philly narrowly outshot Buffalo in the opening period 11 shots to 9. Neither team converted on the power play as well. Buffalo was 0-for-2 on the man advantage, while the Flyers were 0-for-1. Tim Kennedy was called for a cross checking minor for the only Buffalo penalty of the first.
A screen shot by Chris Pronger beat Miller less than a minute into the second period to give Philadelphia a 2-0 lead over the Sabres. Pronger scored after a pass back to the point by Blair Betts. Betts and Laperriere received the assists on the even strength goal. Derek Roy cut the Sabres' deficit in half with a power play goal four minutes later. With a four-on-three power play on going Roy slid a shot past Flyers' netminder Ray Emery to make the score 2-1 Philly. Jason Pominville and Tim Connolly assisted on the special teams score.
van Riemsdyk has given the Flyers another two-goal lead with his third goal of the season. The rookie tried sliding a pass across the front of the net, but the puck deflected off of Miller to re-up the Philly lead to 3-1. Kimmo Timonen was credited with the lone assist on the goal.
Darroll Powe extended the Flyers lead to 4-1 two and a half minutes into the third period. Powe's even strength goal was unassisted. Tyler Myers beat Ray Emery on the power play to cut the Buffalo deficit to 4-2 in the third. Myers unassisted goal came a little more than ten minutes into the final stanza. Roy added an assist for his second point of the night. Captain Craig Rivet also received a helper on the power play goal.
Carcillo scored his second goal of the game with an empty net score with less than a minute to go in the game to seal the victory 5-2 for Philly.
Emery made 28 saves for the victory, while Miller stopped 32 of Philadelphia's 36 shots on goal in the loss. The Sabres were 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Flyers went 0-for-4 on the man advantage.
