(WGR 550) -- The 2009 World Series MVP and a guy who could've earned the honor were among 31 players to file for free agency late Monday.
Hideki Matsui was awarded the honor after going 8-for-13 in the New York Yankees' 27th World Series, while Johnny Damon became one of a select few to win a title for both Boston and New York. Both have filed for the right to sign new deals in the league.
Despite bad knees, it's been speculated that Matsui wants to go somewhere he can play the outfield, not just fill a role as designated hitter, as he did for much of the World Series in New York. Fellow Yankees Xavier Nady, Jose Molina and Eric Hinske also filed. Hinske also has a title for both Boston and New York.
Philadelphia's Pedro Feliz, Minnesota's Orlando Cabrera and the Cubs' Kevin Gregg were among the other notables to file. The general managers are in Chicago for their annual meetings, with trade talk running rampant.
